Aliko Dangote
By Will Griffee For Mailonline

Africa's richest man has expressed his desire to buy Arsenal and declared his first order of business would be to sack Arsene Wenger.

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is a Gunners fan has never hidden his wish to purchase the club even though current owner Stan Kroenke has no plans to sell.

Dangote spoke hypothetically about what he would do if he was to take over at the Emirates.

He told Bloomburg: 'The first thing I would change is the coach. He has done a good job, but someone else should also try his luck.'

And the 60-year-old pledged to make his move for the club following the construction of an £8.5billion oil refinery in Lagos.

Kroenke owns 67 per cent of Arsenal with Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov in control of a 30 per cent stake.
Wenger and Usmanov

Dangote, who is worth £10bn, believes he could tempt both men to leave the club in his hands if a suitable deal was on the table.

He added: 'If they get the right offer, I'm sure they would walk away. Someone will give them an offer that will make them seriously consider walking away.

'And when we finish the refinery, I think we will be in a position to do that.'

Fortunately for Wenger, Kroenke is adamant he will not sell up, with the American backing his long-term manager to bring success back to the club this season

Victor Moses is the name on everyone's lips as he returned to the starting lineup of Chelsea to inspire them to victory against Tottenham hotspurs in the big London derby game on Sunday.

Iheanacho missed the match day through injury and Odion Ighalo's goal run ended over the weekend.

It's the Super Eagles Watch now let's see how others performed across the world.

England

Wilfred Ndidi continued from were he stopped last season as he put up yet another solid display resulting to a two nil victory for Leicester City over Brighton and Hove Albion. Meanwhile his Nigerian teammates, Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho were both entirely missing from the match day squad.

Victor Moses was back in the Chelsea line up as the Blues shook off their opening day lethargic performance defeating North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.

At the Bet365 Stadium, Alex Iwobi came on for the last ten minutes of Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Stoke City. It was his second appearance this season in the EPL.
Wilfred Ndidi

Sone Aluko played the full game for Fulham against Leeds as they held their own away from home to gain one point. It ended Leeds United 0 - 0 Fulham.

Spain

Olarenwaju Kayode came on in the 84th minute as his team Girona threw away the chance to get a historic victory over Atletico Madrid losing a 2 goal lead to end it 2-2.

Olarenwaju came on and almost got the winner against the 10 man Madrid side.

Italy
Joel Chukwuma Obi started for Torino but was pulled off in the 76th minute as they drew away from home to Bologna.

Umar Sadiq was on the bench but was not given the nod to play. It ended 1-1.

Germany
Leon Balogun was an unused substitute for FSV Mainz who lost 1-0 to Hannover 96 on Saturday.

At the Volkswagen Arena, Victor Osimhen watched from the sidelines as Wolfsburg lost 3-0 to Borussia Dortmund. Osimhen is yet to make an appearance for Wolfsburg this new season.

Finland
Gbolahan Salami scored for KuPS in their 2-1 home win against IFK Mariehamn in their Finnish top flight fixture.
Also in action for KuPS was Reuben Gabriel who played for 90 minutes.

China
Striker Odion Ighalo was in action for Changchun Yatai who were held by visiting 10-man Tianjin Quanjian 1-1 in the Chinese Super League on Sunday.

John Mikel Obi returns to the Eagles
Mikel Obi makes a return the Super Eagles after missing out on the last two game as Gernot Rohr has named him in the team to play against Cameroon.

Other returnees to the team are Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and Leon Balogun but there was no place for Brown Ideye, Mikel’s team mate at Tianjin Teda.

Rohr gave a first time call up to Anthony Nwakaeme who plays in Israel with Happoel Be’er Sheva as Nigeria kick starts preparations for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying duels with Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.

Rohr has largely kept faith with his regular army, including goalkeepers Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu, defenders William Ekong, Elderson Echiejile and Abdullahi Shehu, midfielders Ogenyi Onazi, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo, and forwards Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Nigeria welcome the reigning African champions to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday, 1st September, before flying to Yaounde for a quickfire return session on Monday, 4th September.

The Super Eagles are top of Africa’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Group B with six points, after wins over Zambia and Algeria in their first two matches, while the Lions lie second with only two points following 1-1 draws with Algeria and Zambia.

Seven other players have been placed on standby, but any of them would be contacted to move to camp only in the case there is any issue with any player on the list of 23.

It’s time for total clear out at Rivers United

By Peter Abaje

Twenty teams started the race for the current season with equal opportunities but by match day 37 we should start talking about teams set for life in the lower division.

Amongst the teams battling to remain in the elite league is Rivers United and with three games left, the Stanley Eguma tutored lads are condemned to scoop a minimum of 6pts to be sure of life in the elite league next season.

My major worry is not their survival but what should be done before next season gets underway.

Let us assume the team survives, do you think the current management and technical set up should continue in their positions next season?

The obvious answer is a capital No for me.

Nobody saw the poor run of form coming, not after the avalanche of preseason matches that even took the team to Spain.

So permit me to describe their tour of Spain and coach Eguma’s sojourn in Serbia for a refresher course as an effort in futility.

Eguma is a good coach by all standards and he has the ability to spot talent but developing them into top players is his bane and his work ethic is poor to say the least.

There is no doubting the fact that Eguma lost his dressing room and popularity amongst the fans because of the plethora of poor results and the very recent Aiteo Federation Cup loss to Amateur side, Julius Atete FC should be the proverbial straw that finally broke the camel’s back but until then he remains coach of Rivers United FC.

I have my fears that Eguma may not be sacked eventually.

You know why?

The governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike is cousins with Stanley Eguma.

He will tell his cousin that most of the players on the books of the club were imposed on him by certain people around him.

But if I were the Sports Commissioner, Boma Iyaye, the above argument will not get to the ears of the governor before the coach is shown the exit door because tax payers’ money was not wasted on preseason training to get such awful performance.

The General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu will have to go as well.

It is his ineptitude as administrative head is legendary as it is well known that he was the reason why the now defunct Sharks FC were relegated from the NPFL two seasons ago.

Hence the need for him and the entire management team to be shown the exit door at the end of the season.

There are also many interests in the team which include duplication of jobs.

The team has a General Manager, a Director of Football, a General Coordinator, a chief scout, series of assistant coaches, all of these claiming they have an equal stake in the team, causing more harm than good as regards decision taking.

Naturally, all these could work together if their duties were all spelled out, but the case with Rivers United is one of each man wanting to do the job of the other causing lots of bickering and infighting.

The technical unit and management unit are not the only unit that needs overhaul as the playing staff equally needs some pruning.

Some spent forces were brought into the team at the start of the season by folks who were not after quality but personal gains.

Expectedly, these misfits were dropped in mid season for another set of spent forces numbering 19 or there about and instead of adding value to the system they further compounded the woes of the team.

So the ideal thing to do is to dissolve the management, technical crew and retain about 17 players because these season is a disaster already.

If the above measure is not taken, I do not see the team surviving next season if they do this season.

My humble thoughts

Rivers Angels still want League title, says Okon

Rivers Angels Sports Club still has the Nigeria Women Football League title in their sight and this is according to head coach, Edwin Okon.

The Port Harcourt based side finished 2nd behind eternal rivals, Bayelsa Queens in Group A of the regular season and now want to go all the way and win the title in the season ending Super 4 in Benin next month.

Okon said the trio of Bayelsa Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and Delta Queen are familiar foes to his side.

We’ve been working very hard for the Super Four, training everyday to ensure we keep our fitness,” said Okon.

The three teams are well known to me and the players so we just have to think of how to keep the title,” he stated.

Already, bookmakers have ruled out the Port Harcourt side from winning the title following what they called unconvincing performance of the team in the regular season.

Rivers Angels played 13 matches, drawing 4, losing 2 with one of their wins on the road.

Okon, while reiterating his side’s willingness to retain the NWFL title commended the Aisha Falode led board for ensuring the regular season went down well.

I must commend the current NWFL board for a job well done,” Okon said.

Not only did we have a hitch free season, for the first time in a long while, we didn’t record any walkover.

And from what I saw in Lagos during the Super 4 draws, I must say the league has really improved,” he added.

Edwin Okon equally took out time to commend the Edo State Government on accepting to host the Nigeria Women Football League Super Four.

The Edo State Government did well to accept hosting the Super Four tourney in Benin,” said the former Super Falcons gaffer.

It simply tells you how much effort Aisha Falode’s led board is putting in to promote the league.

And the prize money for this season’s winner and runners-up is a welcome development,” summed Okon.

The “Jewel of Rivers” is expected to begin their title defence against Delta Queens on September 12, at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin.

In the meantime, Rivers Angels will be in action this Wednesday against Delta Babes of Asaba in the round of 32 fixtures of the Aiteo Cup at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.

And speaking ahead of the game, Team manager of the Jewel of Rivers, Matilda Otuene has called on fans to come out in their numbers to cheer the girls to victory.

Cameroon’s champion status does not bother Rohr

Gernot Rohr does not seem bothered by the fact that the Eagles come up against champions of Africa, Cameroon in a World Cup Qualifying game on Friday.

After their first training session on Tuesday in Uyo, venue of the game, Rohr told the media that he respects Cameroon who are champions of Africa but he also has a good Super Eagles team.

They are champions of Africa. They were at the Confederations Cup and we know it was not so easy for them.

They have a good team and we also have a good team,” Rohr enthused.

Looking back at the last game against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, the gaffer said the difference between then and now is that the Eagles have a more experienced side.

Now we have experience. Our last game was a very young team but now we have our captain back and our best striker and also some defenders.

So we believe that we also have a good team that can beat them. The last game is finished. Let’s focus on the next one,” said Rohr.

The team had a full training session on Tuesday as eight players arrived on time to join the session following sixteen who arrived in Uyo on Monday.

The coach described it as a training session that will give him selection headaches as the players are ready to go.

It was a good training session. Everybody was around. There were no injuries so it would be difficult to choose the eleven starting players because everybody wants to play.

It is a good thing for us and tomorrow (Wednesday) we continue. Tomorrow will be a closed training session and I ask you to understand because we must have our own training and prepare our team.

I will have in my mind the team that will start against Cameroon.”

The physical presence of the Cameroonians has always been a talking point whenever they play against the Super Eagles and this time is not different.

According to Rohr, the Eagles also have players who are very strong physically.
We missed lots of experience the last time but now some people are back to the team.

It will be a very interesting game, a physical game because Cameroon is strong , physically.

We also have our strong players coming. Every one is focused on this game,” Rohr assured.

Nigeria top the qualifying group with 6 points from 2 games while Cameroon in 2nd place have 2 points.

A win for Nigeria on Friday could see them open a five point lead at the top with three games left to play.

Anthony Nwakaeme vows to take chance against Cameroon

New boy, Anthony Nwakaeme has vowed to take his chances if called upon to play against Cameroon on Friday.

Nwakaeme told the media in a pre- match press conference on Wednesday that he will take his chances if they come.

I have been working hard with my team and I am happy to be here. I just want to take my chance and do my best for the country against Cameroon on Friday.”

The Happoel Be’er Sheva striker has a career total of 33 goals from 125 matches and 6 goals from 18 appearances this year but it getting his first international invite.

I have never been disappointed that no national team coach called me up,” Tony said.

I have always known my time would come and I was only just waiting for the right time and I am happy the current coach has recognised me.”

He will, however, have to contend with returnee striker, Odion Ighalo and Kelechi Iheanacho who got the coach’s nod against South Africa in June.

Leon Balogun upbeat in spite of injury breaks

Leon Balogun says he is looking forward to reuniting with Williams Troost Ekong in the center of the Super Eagles defence against Cameroon on Friday.

The Mainz 05 center back has been in and out of the Nigerian team as a result of recurring injuries but insists it has not slowed him down one bit.

Of course it is always a disappointment to be injured but I do not look at my past.

Injuries are injuries and they are part of the game, but one positive is that is has not affected my performance anytime I am here to play for the Super Eagles,” Balogun said.

Balogun missed Nigeria’s last game against South Africa with injury leaving William Troost Ekong to pair win Central Defence with Chiedozie Awaziem.

Every time I play with William (Troost Ekong) we show that the disconnect does not really break us.

The only thing I am disappointed in is the games I miss because William and I get along on and off the pitch. It is good to be back,” Balogun said.

Leon Balogun first played for the Super Eagles in March 2014 in a friendly match against Mexico, replacing Joseph Yobo at half time, but got injured twenty minutes later as he collided with a signage, missing the World Cup as a result.

A full year after his debut, he played his 2nd match for the Eagles in a 1-0 loss to Uganda on 25th March 2015.

He has played 8 times for Nigeria in three years.

Rohr opens up on Cameroon, Enyeama, Aina

$

With about twenty hours to the crucial World Cup Qualifying game against Cameroon, Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr has opened up on touching issues regarding his team.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Rohr harped on touching subjects like how the team will fare against Cameroon, the return of former captain, Vincent Enyeama and the inclusion of Chelsea Full Back, Ola Aina in the squad

Cameroon is finally here

Rohr described Friday’s game as one he and the team have waited for since November and can’t wait to get over with.

Since November we have waited for this game and it will be an exciting game against the champions.

We also have a good team and have six points. They have two. We want to win this game but they have to win because if they don't, it will be very difficult for them,” Rohr said.

The first half of this game is on Friday and if we win we have a good chance to get a good result in the 2nd one on Monday. We are ready for this game. We know that they are champions. It will be a big challenge.”

With Cameroon playing the Africa Cup of Nations in January and the FIFA Confederations Cup, Rohr says he has done his fair bit of scouting.

We know a lot of things about them because we had the opportunity to see them in the AFCON and the Confederations Cup. They are a good team but we are ready to get a good result.”

He reiterated that the loss to South Africa two months ago will not in any way affect morale for the game.

The objective of this game is to win and go to the World Cup and not the AFCON. I am sure the players here will give their all to go to the World Cup and the AFCON.

“We have always the same confidence in this team. The players are the youngest team we have ever had. Now we look forward and we are sure that this game will be different.”

Ezenwa starts on Friday, Enyeama returns?

Gernot Rohr announced on Wednesday that Ikechukwu Ezenwa would start in goal on Friday against Cameroon because there are injuries to the other three goalkeepers.

The gaffer then named the injured goalkeepers as Vincent Enyeama, Carl Ikeme and Daniel Akpeyi.

When probed further, he made a startling revelation.

We have our experienced players returning and we have some new players. We have problems in our goalkeeping position because three of them are out. Enyeama has meniscus injury and is recovering.

He is not here because he is recovering. We are praying for him and want to have him.
Akpeyi has an injury that came back in the training session. This boy from Nigeria, Ezenwa will be in goal. We are sure that he will do well. We will try to protect him and give him confidence. We are hoping that the crowd in Uyo will give him confidence too,” Rohr said.

Answering questions as to why he listed Enyeama as one of Nigeria’s injured goalkeepers, Rohr continued.

I spoke with him. He is ready to come back but he must be fit before he comes back. The past is the past now and we must be ready for the future. If he is ready, then the other problem is to find a new club because Lille now have two other goalkeepers so it will not be possible to play there.

He will have to find another club in the next transfer window but for now he will be in the 2nd team of Lille. I will watch him play and he must fight for his country and fight for his injury to heal.”

Happy to have Balogun back

After missing out on the game against South Africa in June, Leon Balogun returns to the team and most likely to the starting against the Indomitable Lions.

Rohr believes Balogun’s return will add the much needed aggression to the Eagles’ play.

We are very happy to have Leon Balogun back. He is our German machine. He can bring us a lot of force and we need a little more aggressiveness. We were too gentle against South Africa.
We missed him against South Africa. We also missed our captain in midfield and Victor (Moses) in attack, so we can say in each department we have these players.

It is not a guarantee. There cannot be a guarantee to win the game. We do the best but football is football, especially against a big team like Cameroon, but we are very confident.

We are very happy to have Leon and Ekong together as well as our captain in midfield.”

Waiting on FIFA for Aina

Chelsea Full Back, Ola Aina, now on loan at Hull City is in the team but will not play against Cameroon on Friday.

Rohr insists they are waiting on FIFA to conclude with paper works for Aina to become eligible to play for Nigeria.

We are waiting on FIFA for Aina. He has his Nigerian passport. His father is coming.
The officials say we are missing one letter from government to show he is really a citizen of Nigeria.

It is surprising because he has a Nigerian passport and his parents are Nigerians so I do not know why fifa wants that letter, but as an aside we have invited Uche Agbo.”

The game between Nigeria and Cameroon comes up at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday, September 1, 2017.

Nigeria wait on for Russia 2018 ticket

$

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will have to wait one more game to be certain of a ticket for the World Cup in Russia next year following a 1-1 draw in Yaounde against Cameroon.

After a shock 4-0 win against Cameroon in Uyo on Friday, the Eagles were expected to complete the rout in Yaounde and become the first African country to qualify for the World Cup but conceded a late penalty after going ahead in the first half.

Despite injury concerns for Odion Ighalo after the first leg, Gernot Rohr stuck with the same starting eleven from three days ago.

It was fine play by Odion Ighalo in the 30th minute that put the Cameroonian defence in disarray as he rammed his way into the box after a pass from Shehu, down to the goal line, holding up play well.

A poor clearance got to Victor Moses, who volleyed the ball back into the box but a simple touch from Ighalo and the ball was at the feet of Moses Simon who then put the ball behind the reach of Ondoa in goal for Cameroon.

Ighalo should have scored three minutes later after he was freed by Victor Moses. Ighalo held up play well, dribbled past a defender but his left footed shot went wide.

The Eagles held on to their one goal lead until half time when it seemed the Cameroonians played their way back into the game.

With increased pressure on Nigeria, Leon Balogun was yellow carded in the 52nd minute and then a few minutes later, Bassgog replaced Moukanjo while Vincent Aboubakar was thrown in for Nsame.

Olinga got a yellow card in the 63rd minute and a fatigued John Mikel Obi was taken off for Mikel Agu, the exact same change in Uyo on Friday.

The hosts continued to increase the pressure on Nigeria until a rash challenge by the previously calm Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal for Nigeria resulted in a penalty for Cameroon in the 75th minutes.

Vincent Aboubakar coolly tucked it in and there was more pressure on the Eagles who now began to play off the counter.

Ngamaleu replaced Olinga in the 81st minute, Victor Moses hit the cross bar, Ezenwa saved off a stunner from Zamboa Nguisa, Oghenekaro Etebo replaced Onazi and it was a stalemated affair after 90 plus a few minutes.

Nigeria have 10 points from 4 games and are followed by Zambia who have 4 points from 3 games.

Zambia play at Algeria on Tuesday, both needing a win to stand a mathematical chance of toppling Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup. For Cameroon their race is over.

Eight lessons we should have learned from Nigeria v Cameroon double header

$

Being one of millions of Nigerians who did not think the Super Eagles could beat Cameroon, I made the trip to Uyo not expecting a Nigerian win but to enjoy a good game of football.

I did not go to Cameroon but followed every bit of it on television and the morning after, these are eight lessons I think we should have learned from the double header.

Cameroon is not indomitable

When the draws for the World Cup was made, I remember telling colleagues that “Nigeria will carry last” in the group.

No one should blame me because the Eagles were in disarray at the time, going from Stephen Keshi to Sunday Oliseh to Samson Siasia to Paul Le Gwen (for a few hours) and then Gernot Rohr, all in one year.

Then the Cameroonians had been our eternal nemesis, or so we thought and Algeria was number one ranked team in Africa.

However, the games, especially against Cameroon proved the easiest of the lot.

Nigeria did not just win against Cameroon but completely outclassed them. Then again head to head records showed that Nigeria have been the better side over the years. Cameroon just won the key games like AFCON finals (three of them)

Something good can come out of the Nigerian League
Ikechukwu Ezenwa

Most Nigerians were apprehensive after Vincent Enyeama quit and Carl Ikeme took ill. As far as they were concerned the country was doomed. We had no goalkeeper and Vincent must return, even though he was currently out injured.

When Daniel Akpeyi, who was foreign based “messed up” against South Africa, it seemed the end for the Eagles.

Over two games, I give Ikechukwu Ezenwa a rating of 7 out of 10. he made some errors in Uyo and one in Yaounde that cost us the lead, but with his overall performance Rohr should change his stance on the Nigerian League players.

The fact that his error cost the penalty changes not my opinion of his over performance over two games and Rohr now has decisions to make.

Maybe Victor Moses actually gives his best for Nigeria

More often than not, the Chelsea man goes out with injury on the match day before the international break and Nigerians, especially the sporting media began to push a narrative that Moses does not want to play for Nigeria.

The performance he put up in the two games clearly showed that in a Super Eagles jersey he can rank as one of the best in the world.

In both Uyo and Cameroon, he was all over the place marshaling the destruction of Cameroon, scoring and assisting for good measure.

He did not slow down a step in Yaounde as he proved unstoppable too.

Maybe Chelsea should try Victor Moses upfront in a game or two.

Any team can lose games

After the loss to South Africa in Uyo, Nigerians went ballistic on the players and Gernot Rohr.

Rohr made a mistake in invitation and selection for the game against Bafana Bafana and paid for it dearly.

The Eagles that played against Cameroon were unrecognizable in terns of play compared to the game against South Africa.

Now every one is praising the Eagles again and some even say we can win the World Cup in Russia (hmm).

The Eagles could lose at home to Zambia, or away to Algeria, or away to South Africa in the AFCON.

Nigerians should understand that in the game of football, any team can lose games.

Kids on their own cannot win for you

After a one hundred percent start to his Super Eagles career, Gernot Rohr decided to try a new experiment.

Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye were dropped for Kayode Olarenwaju and Victor Osimhen.

Chiedozie Awaziem was thrown straight into the team and even in the absence of John Mikel Obi, John Ogu did not get to play while Kelechi Iheanacho led the lines with Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon supporting.

The result is legendary and will go down in South African folklore.

Not that I subscribe to the saying that you cannot win anything with kids, mine is, you cannot win anything with kids who do not have proper guidance.

If Nigeria had won against South Africa we would have had the false sense of security not realising that Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and maybe, if he sorts out his club issues, Brown Ideye still have a role to play.

Kids are for the future, but every national team or club needs players to deliver now, while the kids learn with them and grow into being the mainstay of the team.

The NFF need a crash course in organising football matches

As the performance of the Super Eagles get better, that of the NFF gets worse in terms of organising.

Now, I can not really say if I need to put this blame on the NFF alone or the Akwa Ibom State government who took charge of accommodation, logistics and security, but some one has to learn.

Gun totting policeman, beating up journalists and fans and as much as opening canisters of tear gas when there was no crisis at an international match simply just showed that something was wrong and remains wrong.

I saw some personal efforts Amaju Pinnick made to ensure things were done the right way, but a lot must change in international games.

I suggest training workshops for the Nigerian police and DSS (Which is the new one in these games) before any international match.

John Mikel Obi is a team leader

John Mikel Obi has been out of the Super Eagles since Algeria in November 2016 and he returned to tell the world that he was only about seventy percent match fit for the game.

However, he led well and had complete command of the midfield with Ogenyi Onazi and Ndidi Wilfred behind him.

Though not such a commanding performance in Yaounde, the much vilified John Mikel Obi has grown into a midfield general for the Eagles and has shown that he is indispensable in the team.

We still have a left back problem

Elderson Echiejile
In the 80s the Eagles had Bright Omokaro who handed over to Ben Iroha and then Celestine Babayaro who left the position for Ifeanyi Udeze.

But since after Udeze, the Eagles have had a left back problem.

Taiye Taiwo flattered to deceive but apart from free kicks he hardly ever convinced.

For a while, the left back “has been leaking” as we say in local parlance and Elderson Echiejile, knowing that all eyes were on him tried to be careful in Uyo. He hardly ever went forward. He had a decent game.

In Yaounde, the Bassagog v Echiejile battle we feared for eventually happened and the Cameroonian won every duel.

Gernot Rohr is here to build a team, not appear 2 weeks to match day and select players for games.

At this point, he should look inwards. There are left full backs in the Nigerian League that would be more enterprising running down the flanks and defending too.

We can beat Nasarawa Amazons, says Bayelsa Queens coach

Bayelsa Queens coach, Ayebatonye Amabebe knows their opening fixture in the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Super 4 against Nasarawa Amazons is tough but believes his side have what it takes to beat the 2013 league champions.

The coach was bullish when asked about the their chances at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium next Tuesday.

It will definitely be a tough game,” the new Bayelsa Queens boss told Nwfl.com.ng.

But we have our game-plan so I think it will be equally as tough for them. Certainly no-one would have liked to have started the Super 4 with a fixture against Nasarawa Amazons,” he reiterated.

I am privileged to be working with a great group of players - a group that are more than worthy of competing with Nasarawa Amazons.

He then concluded by explaining what he expected tactically from the Lafia outfit.

They are a good team, and we know the characteristics of their game. They are excellent in every facet of their play, but I am more focused on what we can do.”

The 2017 NWPL Super 4 is scheduled to take place from 11th to 16th September in Benin City.

NPFL 2017: Plateau United On the edge of History

Plateau United’s fairy tale in the Nigeria Professional Football League would be complete if they get the job done over Rangers International of Enugu on the final match-day at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos.

Not many gave Kennedy Boboye and his wards a chance at the start of the season but after putting in the leg work, the Jos-based side is unarguably the stand-out team of the season.

Needing a point to lay their hands on a first ever Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title, they will do all they can to put smiles on the faces of Jos fans who have had to endure almost two decades of heartbreak.

No major title has come to the North-central state since the 1999 Federation Cup (now Aiteo Cup) when Donatus Iloka’s solitary goal crowned Plateau United winners of the cup.

Npfl.ng went around Jos to feel the pulse of the fans as the final game of the season looms on the horizon. The frenzy and ‘noise’decibels have stepped a notch as a lot of fans are already in a celebratory mood.

Their stories.

It was exhilarating to see Plateau United promoted to Nigeria's top-flight league in 2015.

Fans were also elated that there were great strides towards improving the club. The appointment of  Zachary Baraje as coach, particularly brought me great joy. At that moment, I knew the club was ready to play ball and it wouldn't be long before we clinched the League title.

2016 season was a great one. Our home record was amazing, it was beautiful seeing Plateau United trounce visitors on home ground. We didn't make the top four as we finished sixth but we were excited.

Life as a Plateau fan even got more exciting when Kennedy Boboye took over. We expected more from the team this season and the boys didn't fail to deliver. Soon we will make history and be crowned champions of Nigeria.

I love the team and the excitement they bring but my personal favourite player is Daniel Itodo. I love him for his long throws. It's always a delight seeing him provide assists with long throw-ins from every part of the pitch.

Hopefully, winning the league will be just the beginning because I believe our best years are still to come.

Watching Plateau United surge to the top of the table and at the cusp of victory is a feeling I can’t explain. Personally, I wasn’t sure we were going to be in the top three teams this season but the team has done quite well to get to this level.

I grew in Jos playing football for local teams and we all had dreams to play for either Highlanders (as Plateau United was called then) or Mighty Jets and win titles with them.

That didn’t happen for me but I’m still overjoyed that by God’s grace the Nigeria Professional Football League title will be coming to Jos.

I watched Plateau United defeat Iwuanyanwu Nationale to win the FA Cup in 1999 and I thank God that I will see another title triumph with my beloved United. I want to plead with the government to invest more in sports and youth development because that is the future of any state or country.

Plateau United’s success this season should show the government that sports and the youth can bring glory to them.

For me and my friends, we will be in at the stadium in Jos where hopefully we beat Rangers International to win the title. I’m very excited right now.

Mary Dalyop. Student, Plateau State Polytechnic

My joy is so much that I cannot express it right now. I’m very sure the team will do us proud and win the league. I’m a student but I always make out time to go and watch the team play. I have been a fan of the team for the past four years now and the journey has been remarkable I must admit.

One thing that has really made me happy is that there is little or no rivalry now between Plateau United and Mighty Jets. Everyone has come to support the team unlike last season and a few seasons back when fans of Mighty Jets will come to the stadium to cheer away teams.

We do not see that again and I believe that is one of the reasons why the team has been successful this season. I’m very happy and I hope the government will continue to support the club when the CAF Champions League starts.

Yohanna Ibrahim, Businessman, Jos.

I was happy when Plateau United appointed Kennedy Boboye as the coach but I never thought we will be in this position as we are right now.

To be candid, I will be lying if I said I knew the league might be heading to Jos. We only need to draw the last game to win the title but I never saw it coming.

I give kudos to the management of the team, the players and the Governor for supporting and motivating the team. You just need to go into town to see how people are excited about the prospect of a first ever title for Plateau State.

One thing that is happening without many people knowing is this success is generating a lot of interest among the youths. If you go to many football fields in Jos, you see young kids wanting to be Elisha Golbe or a Benjamin Turba.

I also saw a few last time I went to watch a local training practicing how to throw the ball like Daniel Itodo does for Plateau United. Our impending victory has made more young people to take football and training more serious.

Hopefully, the government will key into this. I can’t wait for the final game of the season and I hope the boy will make us proud.

Mr Sunday Longbap. Chairman, Plateau State Football Association.

It has been a very tough season for the team but I’m glad we are in a position to celebrate and say we have done well for ourselves.
Sunday Longbap

I must give kudos to the management of Plateau United for all they have done to get the team to this level and top of the league.

The players too have given their all and I must commend them for making Plateau State proud. They gave their all on the pitch and have done Plateau State proud. We had a mission this season and God had blessed us to be top of the league and on the verge of winning the league. I and my board are extremely happy that during our tenure, we were able to lead Plateau United to glory.

I want to specifically thank his Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State Rt. Hon Simon Lalong for his unflinching support for the team.

He has motivated the boys to do well and you know that nothing beats motivation. His Excellency has shown that he is a man of his words and always fulfills his promises. Youth development and sports have always been on top of his agenda and this impending success is a testament to that.

I want to thank him and the entire government for all they have done for the team this season and by God’s grace on Sunday, we shall

NPFL Final Day: Makinwa Surprisingly Claims ABS achieved Success

By Wale Mustapha

Ahead the last match day of the season, Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC coach, Henry Makinwa undertook a self assessment of the side’s performance and rated it as successful by the team’s set objectives.

He didn’t exactly say what that objective is or are but it is general knowledge that the club is on the brink of relegating to the lower division with a match away to Nasarawa United.

ABS returned to the top flight last season from the second tier and started their campaign on a bright note with impressive results and exciting performances.

But the Ilorin based club had a dip in form midway through the season and shipped further down to relegation belt and are hoping to beat the drop going into the final day of this season.

Keen observers would reckon that the season has been miserable for ABS, tagged as giant killers at some point in the campaign but Makinwa won’t accept that rating and has argued that the club is champions in their class and targets. Yet he admitted there have been issues with funding which he attributed to be the major setback for the club to compete against better funded opponents.

"It has been a very productive, positive season, and we are champions in terms of achieving our primary objectives which is empowerment for the youths.

"We are playing with school boys, we have almost 15 to 17 calls for these boys to go to another bigger clubs, the objective is achieved already, that's what the proprietor (Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki) wanted, to empower the youths.

"We have Igbos, Hausa, Yoruba, Efik, Tivs, everybody in the team to be empowered, but he said to us, pick the best legs irrespective of his tribe, on merits and let them empower themselves and their families and I think that one is achieved.

"To compete with others is another question because we are playing and competing with millionaire clubs, they have a lot of millions to buy players, pay big bonuses and salaries to pick the best players all over Africa.

"FC IfeanyiUbah has almost seven to eight international players, Akwa United, Enyimba Int'l, Plateau United all have big players, so it's very tough for us to compete," Makinwa told npfl.ng

Makinwa who played in Spain for Rayo Vallecano insists the blame for ABS' dismal season should spread across everyone who has played any role in the club including himself.

He however called for more focus, support and commitment for the club to end the season on a high.

"Of course I won't be able to say that, others could see it, maybe it's from players but I have my fault as well and everybody with the club has his own part of the fault including the management, the players, all of us. But I have tried to do things correctly on merit according to my thinking and philosophy, so if I've done anything wrong I don't know may be people would see.

"If I have the chance to be here again, I will do the same thing I've been doing, nothing wrong about it, but if we (ABS FC) have money to compete I bet you I will win the league without losing a game, if I have some money other (clubs) have and the players I wanted to have I will win the league unbeaten.

"I'm happy we got over our last home game of the season with a win (ABS FC came back from Angola down to beat Abia Warriors 2-1 last Sunday in Ilorin) It was a tension soaked match and it was a big game because we were a bit psychologically not stable, Abia were too physical but I was positive we would turn it around and happy we did.

"We are still pushing it (survival from relegation) to the last day in the league, still the same intention, same approach, but with a renewed focus, commitment and support from everybody in the team, we hope to win there (against Nasarawa United in Lafia) and we hope other teams get bad results so that we can stay up," concludes Makinwa.

NPFL Final Day 17: How Enyimba's Champions League Dreams Crashed

Enyimba captain, Mfon Udoh
By Clement Nwankpa Jr

Enyimba's Chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu's countenance after Rangers forced his boys to a 1-1 draw in Enugu spoke volumes.

You would have expected him to be happy after news emerged that Akwa United had lost in Ibadan but he obviously had other ideas.

Shooting Stars beating Akwa United thrust Enyimba into third position, needing a win of any sort against Katsina United on the last day to book a CAF Confederation Cup ticket irrespective of what happens in Uyo.

That his boys got a result Akwa United failed to get in Ibadan should make Anyansi-Agwu one of the happiest men around the arena but his mood was shockingly different.

He was among the last to leave as he was glued to his seat long after the final whistle. Hands on his jaw, he gazed into space and couldn't mutter a word. Obviously, bemoaning a lost opportunity. When he managed to rise from his seat, he took the 'long' walk speaking to no one. He was battling hard to subdue his emotions. Men also cry, you know.

His expectations may have been heightened by the fact that his boys led till four minutes of regulation time left. At that point, the prospect of leaving Enugu with maximum points was more appealing. If Chibuzor Madu didn't convert the late penalty that shared the spoils, Enyimba was primed to secure a Champions League ticket if they beat Katsina and MFM fails to win in Maiduguri on the last day.

This was Anyansi-Agwu's ideal scenario. While a return to the continent, whatever competition, is paramount, Enyimba always crave to play in the more illustrious Champions League. Why not? The People's Elephants are two-time African champions and are always comfortable mixing with the continent's best.

The hunger in Enyimba was highlighted in the way they approached the game against Wikki Tourists on match day 36, well aware that only a high scoreline will boost their ambitions. The 4-0 scoreline would have served as a fillip to their quest for the bigger pie.

Enyimba's emphatic defeat of Wikki made Akwa rue missed chances in the 2-1 victory over Lobi two days earlier. Suddenly, the teams were tied on both points and goals difference. Hitherto, Akwa had a superior goals difference, an advantage that would have come to the fore if both teams ended up with the same points.

Match day 37 results changed all these. If both teams lost, it would have come down to who conceded or scored more goals. The emphasis on the last match day would have been on the number of goals scored if they record routine wins at home. But Enyimba's draw in Enugu places them in third position on 58 points, one ahead of Akwa.

The tie on points and goals difference has been broken. Enyimba is now in the driving seat in the battle for the Confederation Cup ticket. Akwa must beat Kano Pillars in Uyo while hoping Enyimba doesn't win against Katsina. But, while Akwa needs favours from Katsina, Enyimba needs no such favours from anyone. All they need to do is beat Katsina and the ticket is in the bag irrespective of what happens in Uyo. This highlights the importance of that solitary point in Enugu.

So while Anyansi-Agwu might play Oliver Twist, he should also take into cognizance the other possible scenarios. What if Enyimba lost and Akwa won in Ibadan? What if Akwa had also drawn in Ibadan? What if the Promise Keepers had even won? Enyimba would have been on the back foot. Now, the ticket is theirs to lose.

Not a few believe Akwa has played the best football all season. They are even good enough to pick a Champions League ticket but Enyimba's experience in season run-ins shone through. It is not yet Uhuru but the knack to get decisive results at crucial moments has made the task easier for the seven-time Nigerian champions. And it is Akwa's failure to get such key results that has been their bane.

But, while these teams' aspirations have been limited to the Confederation Cup ticket, MFM should be grateful to Madu for not missing the late minute spot kick against Enyimba. MFM coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has been talking tough, fancying his team's chances of beating Elkanemi in Maiduguri while wishing Plateau bottle it against Rangers paving the way for the Olukoya boys to win the title. Ilechukwu can now concentrate on overhauling Plateau at the top since he has no cause to look over his shoulders.

One man's meat, another's poison. Anyansi-Agwu's loss, Ilechukwu's gain.

My unpublished Super Eagles Uyo diary

I actually wrote this diary on Friday, September 1, 2017 and was about to publish when a series of unfortunate incidents ensured I did not. However, thank goodness all is not lost and i am publishing it unedited.

i actually initially titled it, "My Super Eagles Uyo Diary Day 1: My Uyo nightmare.

No one is as excited as they were last time when we were all here for the game against South Africa.

At least not every one and they are truly not hiding the fact that they are not as excited and as enthusiastic.

The truth is as much as a lot of die hard Nigerians would want to play hard ball, they know deep down in their hearts that the Cameroonians are here for no tea party.

Nigeria may have a 4 point cushion at the top of their qualifying table but worst case scenario it could be 1 point by Friday night and we could be 2 points behind the Cameroonians by Monday.

That is how apprehensive the people are in this town and they have not hidden it.

Between the Nigeria Football Federation and the Akwa Ibom State government, security at the Super Eagles hotel, I hear was heightened with extra deployment of Department of State Security, DSS and soldiers?

When we were here for the game against South Africa, there was DSS involved in security at the hotel and when one of them told me they were sent there to ensure the Eagles stayed focused on the game, my response to him was that we love to put pressure on ourselves.

My thinking then was that, we had played against Zambia and Algeria in Uyo and if we suddenly had DSS shoving people around against South Africa, it would create the impression that there was something eerily different about the game, the cause of pressure sometimes.

But I digress. We lost to Bafana, didn’t we?

I didn’t for once go to the Super Eagles hotel because I am not big on sycophancy and eye service which was what I thought the DSS official would portray in a bid to show their employers that they were doing a good job.

I'd have to be careful at the press conference room though
Over packed press room in Uyo

But my Uyo nightmare actually has nothing to do with the game but what happened the last time I was in this town for a League match.

It was one between Akwa United and Enyimba and after the game we went as usual to the conference room for the post match rituals.

There were about 12- 15 of us there and as I placed my recorder in front of the coaches, I stepped back a bit, asked 2 questions then listened to the responses of the coaches to the others.

At some point, an Uyo based journalist standing next to me, asked permission to use my glasses case to hold his recorder in place.

After the press conference we all left the stadium as the former media officer of the home club, Uwem Ekoh dropped me off at my hotel.

As soon as I got to the hotel I realised I had left my glasses at the stadium’s conference room and immediately put a call to the media officer of the club, Mfon Patrick who told me to back to get it with assurances that it would be in there as he trusted his journalists.

To cut the long story really short I never got it back. Even when I spoke with the likes of Promise Etim who all assured that no Uyo based journalist would have picked it up, I never got a positive response.

I loved those glasses and it casing. It also cost me a fortune. But whoever took it and thought he had made a conquest is a complete fool because he can’t even wear them.

It is going to be a mad house for this game with at least 100 journalists from all over the country. One has to be careful.

Having cleared that off my chest, I left Port Harcourt as usual early on Thursday morning to Uyo and after managing to go past the Akpajo-Eleme terror road, it was smooth driving to Uyo.

Ekine Moseph, Queen John, Fisayo Dairo, Emeka Dennar and Bibian Onwugbolu from Port Harcourt were already on ground.

I had no plans to go the to Super Eagles Hotel, I never do on the eve of games so I just stayed indoors to continue to monitor something important

Transfer Deadline Day

I had more than 100 Gigabytes of data on my Mifi so I had been streaming Skysports News all the way from Port Harcourt checking if my club, Liverpool had signed Thomas Lemar or Virgil Van Dirj.

When I got into my apartment, my protege, Ekine Moseph came visiting and we discussed the European Transfer Deadline Day, analyzed what we thought were incoming transfers and asked ourselves some tough questions.

Why can’t we have Transfer Deadline Day in Africa?

I reminded Moseph that the South Africans had Transfer Deadline Day that aligned with that of Europe and he pointed out that the Egyptians had something of that nature and we wondered why we were not that organized in Nigeria.

I let him know that in thought we thrived on disorganization and pointed out that there are lots of people in the Nigerian football scene that make fortunes because of disorganization and would fight with their lives to see that Nigerian football is not as organized as it is so they can continue their racketeering.

In any case, we followed the Transfer Deadline Day as much as we could until the rest of the contingent from Port Harcourt arrived – Carl Orakwue, Tonye Orabere, IK Wigodo, Sammy Omaenikun, Okey Onwugbonu, Faith Oluchi, Gabriel Nwanetanya, Uche Abugo, Oluwafemi Balogun and a few others.

Stadium for accreditation
Waiting to get accredited

Rooms taken (I had reserved 20 rooms at this hotel two weeks ago because the Port Harcourt contingent had sequestered it last year)we rested a bit before heading out for accreditation and to watch the Cameroonians train.

Naturally, it was a closed session so you would only be permitted to watch the first fifteen minutes and off you go.

It was the Super Eagles next and the same thing was first fifteen minutes and off we went.

As usual, the NFF media team would delay the start of accreditation and keep people waiting so it was not until 7:30 pm that the whole process started.

Tags in hand, we were off to end the day.

A great reunion
Arafat Aliu had "boycotted" Super Eagles games for a while

It was great to see Oluwashina Okeleji again. We have great history together since 2004 when we both wrote for a man called Wilson Bodise and www.nigeriasports.comand great memories working together.

It was also good to see Arafat Aliu again. I hadn’t seen him at a Super Eagles game since the time late Stephen Keshi was coach in 2012/13.

Lolade, formerly of goal.com was also present and it was great to see him.

But like I keep saying, that is what these games are for. Aside from the fact that we all come here to get news for our newspapers, blogs, radio and TV shows, it is also a great re-union for colleagues, some of whom get to meet just on the field.

Nigerians like over sabi
Man in jeans and hooded sweat shirt instructed refs not to take pictures

Something happened while we were walking into the stadium. The match officials also walked in at that point and some journalists stopped them to take pictures which they obliged.

Suddenly, their guide, a Nigerian, I think from the home state, suddenly turned around, looked at what was happening and from about 20 meters shouted in and angry voice, “Hey! Stop taking those pictures! Leave that place now.”

And I got really angry.

I walked up to the fellow and asked him if he thought those referees were kids or if they had no right to stop and take pictures with people who requested.

Because Nigerians are really like this.

But that was just me being… fill up the blank spaces.

Dinner with Uche and the crew

Uche Abugo was a Port Harcourt based Sports broadcaster and had threatened to host the team from Port Harcourt in Uyo. This threat had been going on for about 3 weeks and the time was nigh.

Even though some of us thought we were tired after the long day, Tonye Orabere decided we should just honour a person who wants to host us by attending it and so we all went.

Gabriel Nwanetanya was to drive the bus and couldn’t make it but he later thought he would just drop us there and then we find our way back.

He later said he could stay 30 minutes with us but eventually we were there for more than one hour.

I will not say what happened at Uche’s place. Just the pictures that speak thousands of words.

NPFL Last Day 17: Rangers in last Dance at the Cathedral as Champions

By Harry Iwuala

Dateline: October 2, 2016. The surge of human and vehicular traffic on the popular Ogui Road stretched to the Otigba Junction coming from the left side of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. It has sometime in the course of the 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season been nicknamed the Cathedral.

They were all headed to the stadium with different banners but all proclaiming ‘Rangers International, another champion. By the end of the evening when Rangers defeated El-Kanemi Warriors to lift their first league title in 32 years, there were over 25,000 fans inside the dome and many more outside.

There were all shades on Rangers followers on that day at the stadium, ranging from the very rich to the impoverished, the very important and the proletariat, the popular and the unknown, the old, the youth and children, male and female. It was a scene similar to January 20, 2008, when African Americans watched with teary eyes, smiles of history and sighs of relief as Barack Obama sworn in as the first ever African American President in the over 200 years of Democracy in the nation of Star spangled banner. Rangers’ fans on October 3, 2016 also wept at the renaissance of the club. Tears of joy flowed because just like the African Americans who never believed there will be an Obama having endured over two centuries of slavery and civil rights denials, many of the older Rangers fans confessed; they never knew they will live to see such spectacle.

Sunday, September 3, 2017: At the same Cathedral, seven times champion and eastern neighbours, Enyimba International; were in Enugu for the traditional Oriental Derby but the crowd came in trickles despite the high stakes for both sides in the fixture. But as the encounter progressed with the visitors a goal up, a sudden burst of arrivals hit the stands. Estimates at the end of the match which saw Rangers claw back to a 1-1 draw was put at over 12,000.

As was aptly captured by former Nigerian international and one time African Player of the Year, Victor Ikpeba, one of the pundits for Supersport, the Official Broadcast partner to the league, “we have half of the fans that witnessed the trophy presentation coming to say goodbye to the trophy”.

But earlier before the kick-off, a member of Rangers Management had lamented the drop in Rangers’ fortune on and off the field and while not submitting that the change in Management is a factor, suggested that they had the wrong persons at the helm. He expressed reservations that the club lost an opportunity to build on last season’s greatness because ideas to entice fans to the stadium were not being addressed.

It was learnt that in a bid to shore up the dwindling numbers on the stands, Flavour, the Enugu local who has found continental fame through music was approached to hold up the club’s famous red and white flag as a form of endorsement which he readily agreed. But that huge goodwill was not put to use, it was learnt. This and perhaps, the poor run, exit of key players may explain the huge drop in numbers at the Cathedral which recorded an average of 18,000 in attendance every match day last season.
From Celebrating title win to jumping up for Draw and Survival

From reactions on the stands during the match, Rangers fans must have longed for a valedictory win and indeed to complete a double over Enyimba. Despite what some of them adjudged as unfair calls by the Referee, their glee was not to be denied at the final whistle which saw over 2000 of them breach the security to invade the pitch in light hearted mirth.

They turned the turf to a privileged playground, dancing even when there was no music from the loud speakers. Others executed acrobatic displays, doing continuous back flips and seeking ‘Selfie’ photo shots with the players and with each other. You would think it was a celebration of title.
Imama Amapakabo was sacked at some point in the season

Catching up with an elderly fan, Francis Ogbodo who sat rooted on one of the state box seats, he surveyed the scene with deep contemplation and when nudged to give his thoughts, said, “I am just wondering how the celebration of nearly a year ago has turned to a celebration of survival of relegation.

After a 32-year wait to win the title, we have now gone back below where we started from. It is sad and not a good story to tell the young fans. Our support for Rangers has been sustained by the exploits of the past but what will the younger ones hold on to? It is the reason they are Arsenal, Manchester, Chelsea etc etc.”, concluded Ogbodo as he held the arm rest to support his effort to be on his feet.

Earlier in the day at a popular restaurant, Emily off Ogui Road, I had run into
Chibuzor Ozor, the long serving General Manager who superintended the historic win by Rangers before he was relieved of the job. Ozor, called Sayama by some of his friends and associates walks with a bounce. Standing slightly above 4 feet; Ozor who also goes by the nickname, ‘Americana’ dresses to please his senses and not for popular acclaim. At the launch hour encounter, he was dressed in starched Italian linen white short sleeved shirt and trousers and after the pleasantries, exclaimed in his affected American accent, “my men, you guys have forgotten me…oh, that’s the way of life but you are my friend and should not abandon me”.

There are those who believe that the problems Rangers encountered in the about to end season started right from the podium where the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi accompanied by the Deputy Senate President, Ikechukwu Ekweremadu received the trophy from the team captain, Okey Odita. A friend from the media pointed out that the governor delivered no inspiring comments to the players and management. He was admonished by another that the occasion was not for making speeches and promises.

The next news out of Enugu was the city trophy tour of the players aboard a rickety truck that won’t be certified to transport livestock. Thereafter, the blames trading started with some anonymous sources pointing to the direction of the former state commissioner for sports as the brain behind the roadshow of shame.

Finally, shortly before Christmas, the Governor hosted the team and promised cash reward totaling N41.5m and lands. The players went away grumbling. The total money offered the players and officials would come to less than N1m for each of the 35 registered players and 7 accredited officials.

They started the season in tatters, losing 2-1 to Abia Warriors on opening day and prior to that; had finished third in the pre-season tournament, NPFL Super4 which was organized by the League Management Company in Enugu.

So continued the free fall, Ozor was sacked and replaced by former captain and coach of Rangers, Christian Chukwu. Imama Amapakabo was next after initial disagreements over his contract terms. Players like Chisom Egbuchulam, voted MVP of the NPFL left for Sweden and was followed by Obinna Nwobodo, another key figure in their run for the title. Others were in and out of camp and the internal squabbles showed in their performance every match day.

We need some “loose talk” in sports journalism

My Twitter timeline was abuzz on Wednesday with talk about Nigerian rapper MI Abaga and some podcast.

I actually saw a 4 minute clip of the LooseTalk Podcast- as it was called - that had the popular artiste showcase amazing levelheadedness in the face of brutal attack from the host of the show.

MI, in a rather cool, calm and collected manner responded to the host’s unsavoury comments which prompted an apology afterwards from the host.

That, got me hooked. I made a mental note I was going to watch the full podcast later because I had my hands full at the time.

I was engaged in cleaning up a mess online: educating fans on what the Super Eagles needed to do to ensure qualification to next year’s World Cup in Russia.

The day had started with me having a heated argument with a colleague on a WhatsApp group on the same issue. While he maintained that a point against Zambia was good enough to see the Super Eagles in Russia, based on the Head-to-Head rule, myself and a few others kept reiterating the opposite – Super Eagles needed an outright win to guarantee automatic qualification as only that will ensure team can’t be caught by the Chipolopolo of Zambia.

I didn’t realise the magnitude of the ignorance until I left WhatsApp for Twitter and Facebook.

But then, I should’ve known!

Just a day earlier, the communications department of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had sent out a press release noting that the Super Eagles needed a point from their last 2 games to guarantee qualification.

It read in part: “Cameroon merely delayed Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket celebration…. In the event, the Super Eagles WILL qualify for their sixth FIFA World Cup finals with one point from their last two matches…..”

There are two deductions to be made from this.

One, the NFF (at least through its communication department), believed a win vs Cameroon was enough to guarantee qualification irrespective of the outcome of the other game.

Yes, that was a possibility if the other group game - which at the time of sending the press release, had not been played - ended with an Algerian win or a draw.

But, a very BIG BUT, there could be another likely outcome from the game – a Zambia win meant Cameroon’s draw wouldn’t have in anyway “delayed (our) celebration,” as we still risked possibility of missing out.

Two, we drew and didn’t get the qualification that the NFF hoped for which “delayed celebrations”, BUT a point against Zambia or Algeria WAS ENOUGH to see us through!

Well, possible!

Probably, not enough!

How?

As at the time the press statement was put out, Nigeria had 10 points as opposed to 4 for Zambia.

Scenario 1: A point from our last 2 games, say Algeria, would see us finish with 11; Zambia had 9 points to fight for and if they got all 9, would finish with 13.
This alone renders the whole NFF qualification-with-a-point narrative inconsequential.

But there was another likely route.

Scenario 2: Assuming, the point Nigeria needed would be against Zambia, Nigeria would still end up with 11 while Zambia can still get 7 to also finish with 11.

Unfortunately, the NFF press statement was premised on Scenario 2 with the assumption that if it happened this way, Nigeria would still qualify on the head-to-head rule.

HOW WRONG!

At least many now know the tie breaker in the event that Scenario 2 played out was Goal Difference. Depending on likely scores in the last two games, it could swing with Zambia overtaking us.

Probably unlikely, but not IMPOSSIBLE!

How did the NFF not know this?

And why has the NFF, 3 days after, failed to send a rejoinder to correct this glaring error?

I spent almost my whole Wednesday correcting these assumptions. From responding to big  handles such as @ManUtdPidgin and @EbukaAkara who had large followers on Twitter and had made the same NFF error in their posts, to replying the numerous enquiries on my Facebook post, it just wasn’t an easy task.

After my penultimate radio show ended at 7pm, I finally had time to watch the LooseTalk Podcast with MI. I watched for an hour, went to present a 30 minutes sponsored show and came back to finish the remaining part of the show.

The rapper appeared on the popular podcast because one of the show hosts had written an article about him that MI didn’t take lightly.

While I won’t bore you with all the cursing, swearing and hip-hop BS that went on in the no-holds-barred interview, here’s what I took away: FACTS ARE SACRED, NOT OPINIONS!

One of the show host, AOT2, had written that MI’s Chairman Album had no Shelf Life – meaning it wasn’t doing well again in the market because it made little or no impact. The Taraba-born artiste in a coordinated and calm manner came on the show and with FACTS, proved to the journalist that he had written a LIE!

Over the course of the very long podcast, MI kept reiterating that he came on the show because he RESPECTED the work of the journalists and he expected HIGHER STANDARD from them since they have a large following. He also pointed repeatedly, that the LIE that had been written had been consumed hook, line and sinker by almost everyone who read the article.

As I write this, MI, Osagz (one of the show hosts) and #LooseTalkPodcast are still trending topics on twitter.

It got me thinking.

Today’s sports journalism industry needs a watershed moment like the one from the LooseTalk Podcast.

FACTS are no longer SACRED; CLICK BAITING is now the order of the day; the rush to be the first to type BREAKING, or even worse, screaming headlines -EXCLUSIVE -when in actual fact we didn’t conduct interview alone, to mention a few, has made us lose all sense of responsibility.

My generation needs to do better. We need to get away from this copy and paste mentality that has seen our industry in near comatose state.

A few days ago, I had to call out a colleague on a WhatsApp group who had specialized in this copy and paste syndrome.

He posted score-lines of some World Cup qualifiers with two headlines: FULL TIME and UPDATE.

Apparently, he picked it up from somewhere without out even bothering to check if the scores were correct.

Because I had seen most of the games or knew the score-lines, I didn’t even need to double check to know what he posted was wrong.

When I pointed this out, he apologized and then posted a few corrected score-lines and asked me to check if they were right.

In a public forum!

Question is, as a reporter, shouldn’t you know that you should check that what you’re putting out to the public is factually correct before you put it out?

Do you need an MI LooseTalk moment – or in this case, me – to point that out?

How about the numerous times we have seen stories with screaming headlines - EXCLUSIVE; REVEALED; JUST IN – but you end up reading such stories with the writer’s opinions masqueraded as facts or fabricated quotes published?

Here’s another scenario: Yesterday, the Nigeria Basketball Federation sent out a press release sympathizing with Rivers Hoopers over its failure to attend the on-going Final Play-Offs.

The statement also tried to absolve the NBBF President, Musa Kida, from the debacle and placed the blame solely on the Rivers State government.

Now this was after players of the club appeared on a radio show on Nigeria Info FM Port Harcourt and accused Kidda of being the reason why they weren’t in Kano.

Prior to this, some media outfits had gone with the same allegation but theirs was based on innuendo, gossip and/or off-records conversations.

I refused to join in the conversation because I couldn’t deal on gossip or innuendo and wanted someone to go on the record so I could attribute the accusations against Musa Kida to someone.

Simple journalism/broadcasting rules isn’t it?

But if it was this simple, how come many chose to disregard this basic principle?

Do we actually need an MI, Kidda or Pinnick to come on our respective shows and teach us the basic principle of journalism which is that we write/talk on FACTS?

My generation needs to do better!

As it is now, most of us journalists – young and old - are mostly concerned about the number of social media groups we belong to; how to interview top sports administrators/athletes in exchange for benefits; sycophancy in exchange for contracts and/or juicy appointments…..

Maybe, we do need some #LooseTalk moment!
