Rivers Angels' Rufiat Sule |
There were bizarre scenes in Port Harcourt in the AITEO/ Federation Cup Round of 16 as a goalkeeper abandoned a game for conceding too many goals.
Amarachi Ojinma scored a double brace in Rivers Angels’ 9-0 thrashing of Ben Women, but goalkeeper Grace Ogalabu made all the headlines when she abandoned the game in the 63rd minute for conceding too many goals.
Rivers Angels opened scores as early as the 4th minute when Rufiat Sule jabbed home a cross from close range.
The visitors held on for another 29 minutes before conceding in the 35th when Amarachi Ojinma started her journey to getting a double brace.
Rufiat Sule got her brace in the 45th minute while Ojinma scored her 2nd of the day, still in the first half, just before the whistle sounded for half time.
Drama started in the 2ndhalf when Amanda Mbadi scored the 5th goal for Rivers Angels in the 60th minute as the goalkeeper of the hapless Ben Women, Ogalabu was seen shouting at her defenders, apparently for letting her down.
At this point she took off her gloves and turned her back on the field while the game restarted.
The Rivers Angels players kept passing the ball, not sensing that the goalkeeper of their opponents had gone rogue so didn’t take any long range shots, but the next attack by the Angels in the 68th minute ended with a hand ball that the referee, Uloma Nwogu wasted no time to award as penalty.
Grace Ogalabu was fed up. She walked away from the goal area and sat outside the playing perimeter, close to the corner flag, refusing to have any more part to play in the game.

With no options left, coach of the Ben Women threw on substitute goalkeeper, Cele Emeka who saved the penalty at the first time of asking before Amarachi Ojinma buried the rebound to make it 6-0 nil and her hattrick.
Three more goals from Rivers Angels in the 69th through Patience Kalu, 72ndthrough Amarachi Ojinma and 78th by Mabel Effiom completed the 9 goal rout.
After the game, head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon expressed his happiness at the high scoreline, saying it was not an easy feat.
"You should know we're the defending champion so It wasn't an easy one," said the gaffer.
"However, I am overwhelmed with joy because scoring 9 goals in a competition like this is not easy.
"The Aiteo Cup is one that has lots of surprises and there are no pushovers so I am quite happy," added Okon.
There was another high scoring women game as Nasarawa Amazons went all the way to Beautiful Tours to win 10:0
