Dolphins want shift in League timings

Joe Johnson
Dolphins General Manager, Joe Johnson says he will desire a shift in timings of Nigerian League matches to avoid a clash with English League games.

Johnson, just like most other managers in the Nigerian league are battling low turnout of fans at their grounds on league match days and he says a change in the timing may sort it.

“I would have wished it was possible for our timings to be changed because if you notice our gate takings increase slightly when the English league is on recess.

“But as soon as there is a clash with EPL games, we hardly see people at the stadium because they prefer the other one,” Johnson said.

Johnson gave an example of an incident at the Sharks stadium where a viewing center had more fans in it than those at the stadium watching the league match.

“It tells you our perception here. I think we really need to do a lot more and I don’t know what else, throw the gates open or make mouthwatering offers for fans? Yet people are not interested in it,” Johnson said.

Dolphins and Sharks in Port Harcourt most likely have the lowest turnout of spectators in the league, but the management is working on ways to change the trend.

Kunle Odulami and Prince Aggrey of Sunshine Stars celebrate the winner
The League Management Company, LMC has wielded its big stick on a few culprits adjudged to have brought the game to disrepute.

The game between Sunshine Stars and Dolphins at the Akure Stadium on Sunday was had at least four controversial moments, one of them eventually deciding the tie and the LMC have decided to act fast.

First, it was two players of Sunshine Stars who stripped themselves to celebrate their winning goal against Dolphins FC who have been suspended for one match each and also fined N50, 000 for indecent exposure and conduct capable of bringing the league to disrepute.

Prince Aggrey and Ebenezer Odunlami however has in line to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) framework and regulations, have 48hours to either submit to the League Management Company (LMC) decision and or elect to be dealt with by a special LMC commission.

Referee hit too

But it was contrasting fortunes for some Referees who officiated on the same Match Day as the NFF Referees Committee upheld a recommendation of the League Management Company (LMC) to sanction two match officials involved in the fixture.

Center Referee, John Charles from Enugu State Referees Council and his Assistant Referee II, Matador Ogunta from Abia State Referees Council were suspended from further officiating in matches of the Glo Premier League for the rest of the season.

The two match officials overall performances during the match was considered below the standard required for top flight football and capable of bringing the league to disrepute.

Chairman of the Referees Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ahmed Yusuf Fresh announced the decisions and also said the match officials who handled the fixtures in Ilorin and Kano have been formally commended for their excellent performances.

Center Referee Patrick Ishaya from Kaduna State referees council and S.K Akinwale from Oyo State referees council became the first match officials to receive commendation from the league body for their excellent performance in a move that is aimed at motivating the match arbiters to stay unbiased in their officiating.

“We made the recommendations to the Referees Committee as a deliberate step to ensure that officiating in the league is fair and consistent with global refereeing standard,” said Salihu Abubakar, Chief Operating Officer of the LMC.

Stanley Eguma gets hit too
Stanley Eguma

Furthermore, the coach of Dolphins FC, Stanley Eguma has also been fined N100, 000 by the LMC for his comments to the media after the match in Akure against Sunshine Stars FC.

The LMC said the comments could bring the league to disrepute and disparage the brand.

The LMC advised Eguma and indeed all stakeholders to utilize proper channels to ventilate their complaints and grievances and avoid making public comments capable of bringing down the league.

Breaking: NFF Reappoint Keshi!

The NFF Have Just Reappointed Stephen Keshi As The Head Coach Of The Super

In a press conference in the media centre of the Abuja National Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Stephen Keshi's appointment was finally announced to the Nigerian media.

He has been awarded a two year deal as head coach of the Super Eagles.

The media and fans alike are split on the news. Many still praise Keshi for delivering the AFCON trophy a few years back, while others vilify him for his failure to make it to the 2015 edition in order to defend his title, however it must be added that Keshi was working without a contract since the World Cup finals in 2014.

Keshi spoke to the media about moving forward together:

“We need the media. I cannot do this alone,” said the Big Boss.

“I will work with my office (the nff) to move our football forward. The past is the past.”

“We lost in the past, we drew and we lost. But we have to move forward now.”

Leading sports website, www.SL10 Reveals The Strict Conditions In Stephen Keshi's New Two Year Deal

Stephen Keshi will be sacked if he fails to reach the semifinals of the 2016 CAF championship for African players based at home (CHAN), SL10.ng can exclusively report.

The 53-year-old former NIGERIA captain signed a new 2-year contract to continue as the Super Eagles coach, but SL10.ng understands he may not have as much 'liberty of performance' as he did in his previous contract.

Clause 4.1 of the contract states that:

“The NFF shall employ the head coach for a period of two (2) years.

“Provided in the unlikely event that the senior male national team (the Super Eagles) under the head coach fail to make it to the semifinals of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the NFF in its absolute discretion may decide to terminate this PRESENTcontract.”

This now means Keshi must not just qualify Nigeria for the 2016 CHAN, but must also get to the semifinal of the COMPETITION at the very least.

The former Togo coach won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa with the Eagles, after failing to lift the trophy in 19 years.

But he was far less fortunate in 2014, as he failed to lead the team to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in a group that had South Africa, Congo and Sudan.

The 'Big Boss' will also be sacked if the NFF feels he doesn't possess the ability or COMPETENCE to achieve the federation's goals.

Clause 4.3 reads:

“Notwithstanding the provisions set out above or any other provision in this contract, the federation shall retain the right to terminate this agreement at any time where it is of the opinion that the coach, as demonstrated by his performance does not possess the ability or COMPETENCE to achieve the federation's objectives as set out in this contract. In such a case, the NFF shall summarily terminate this contract without prejudice to the settlement by the parties of any existing financial obligations between them.”

Meanwhile, Keshi is also expected to consult with both the technical committee and the technical study group before SELECTING players for both friendly and competitive games.

Clause 5.4 of the contract says:

“The head coach shall SELECT the best crop of players of the Super Eagles who are in his opinion ready to excel in friendly and competitive games in consultation with the technical committee and the technical study group of the NFF.”

This is one area that could stir some controversy in the future, as it will be recalled that Keshi had some running battles with the immediate past technical committee of the NFF headed by Chris Green, over the invitation and SELECTION of players.

But speaking at the signing ceremony on Tuesday, Keshi says he has wholly agreed to the terms of the contract, and has no problems with the clauses.

Meet Emeka Nwanna, Nigeria’s first one million naira player

$

Emeka Nwanna
Emeka Nwana still plays his football for Enyimba but has been in the Nigerian football scene for more than twenty years now.

He had played for the likes of EnyiPet, an amateur side in Aba and then he moved to NEPA of Umuahia who beat Enyimba in the state FA finial in 1995.

He then moved to Mobil Pegasus of Eket before signing up for Rangers International.

He joined Enyimba from Rangers, had a stint abroad before he returned to Enyimba a few years back.

Nwanna is one player who has been there, done that and seen it all.

Most of all he was the first player in the Nigerian League to attract a fee of one million naira when he crossed from Rangers International to Enyimba in 2000.

That year, while playing for Rangers International, they lost a game in Aba, 1-0 to Enyimba.

The game was watched by the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu who fell in love with the robust, all action style of Nwana, also known as Ayaya.

After the game, the governor called him up and gave him one million naira, cash as his signing on fees, whilst they waited for both clubs to sort out transter fees.

Rangers, then led by ex international, Davidson Owumi refused to let Nwanna go and after a long drawn out transfer imbroglio, Emeka Nwanna joined Enyimba.

Naijafootball247.com caught up with Nwana and he shared these thoughts on his career.

naijaFootball247: Confirm that you are indeed Nigeria’s first one million naira player

Nwanna: Yes it’s true.

Naijafootball247.com: Did that put pressure on you to deliver?

Nwanna: No! I was doing my job, the way it is supposed to be done so it did not put pressure on me

Naijafootball247.com: You, as well as the likes of Victor Ezeji, Isiaka Olawale and Sunday Rotimi have been around for a while. How do you cope?
Victor Ezeji has played 19 seasons in Nigeria

Nwanna: It’s because of the kind of life I live that has made me able to sustain myself. The Nigerian League is tough and what kills players is when you live a life that is not good enough for football. It affects you. When I made my name, I didn’t smoke, drink or womanize and that’s why I’m still playing actively today.

Naijafootball247.com: When Nigerians leave the country, they don’t return… why did you come back?

Nwanna: Instead of me staying abroad when all is not well, I told myself I had to come back and start again. It’s my fatherland and I cannot run away from it so I came back to start again with Enyimba.

Naijafootball247.com: Sitting with the younger players, what kind of advise do you give them?

Nwanna: I talk to them. I advise them to follow the right path so they can last in the game. I also give them words of encouragement every now and then. I really do talk to them

Naijafootball247.com: what is your personal target this season with Enyimba

Nwanna: Last season we won the Federation Cup and finished second in the league. This season we want to win the league and chase the CAF Champions League too. I also want to play two or three more seasons in Asia before I quit.

Naijafootball247.com: So you still want to leave the country?

Nwanna: Yes, to Asia, for at least two more years

Naijafootball247.com: And make some money too?

Nwanna: And make some money too

Naijafootball247.com: You mentioned Asia, why not Europe?
Nwanna: I cannot start calling Europe because of my age.

Naijafootball247.com: Seems you are true to yourself
Nwanna: Why would I lie to myself? The most important thing you have to tell yourself is the truth. That would be self-deceit, wouldn’t it?

Naijafootball247.com: Thank you for your time
Nwanna: You are welcome

Note: this interview was done before Enyimba got knocked out of the CAF Champions League

LMC clears air on player contract regulations

$

0

The League Management Company, LMC have come out to say their player contract regulation in place since the 2013/14 season was done in the best interest of the league and the players.

Previously, Nigerian league clubs signed players yearly until the LMC came up with regulations that insisted on minimum of three year deals expect those over 30 or who had played at least ten years in the league.

In a recent statement made available to naijafootball247.com, the LMC has clarified that the rule stipulating minimum of three years contract for players was introduced to stem some problems that were identified after a careful study of the situation that prevailed in the past.

Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of the LMC in a response to issues raised by the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria (APFON) declared that the minimum of one year contract advocated by the umbrella body of players affected clubs and players negatively.

"The LMC met a situation in the league where a large number of player contracts lasted for a period of one year only. This adversely affected the stability and commercial viability of the clubs as well as the welfare of the players,” Abubakar said in a response to the APFON Executives.

The LMC refuted the claims by APFON that the regulation on contract duration enslaves players noting that, “…contrary to your claim that the rule enhances enslavement and abuse of players’ rights, the rule actually enhances stability in the employment of players. Note that the rule does not prevent players from being transferred to another club after one season upon mutual agreement between both clubs and agreement of personal terms between the player and the transferee club.”

Abubakar outlined some of the problems that plagued the previous contract regime to include mass exodus of players at the end of every season, adverse effects on clubs and players arising from payment of sign on fees, inability of clubs to focus on nurturing and developing players. Also listed are seasonal large scale alterations to team line-ups which discouraged fans' followership, unilateral and indiscriminate termination of players' contracts and payment of seasonal wages as against annual wages.

The LMC further said it was to resolve these problems for the mutual benefit of the clubs and players that the three-year minimum contract rule was enacted and pointed out that the FIFA regulation cited by APFON permitted national associations to vary the minimum and maximum periods of contract duration where it is consistent with national laws.

“We note that your letter conspicuously failed to identify any harm or disadvantage to players or clubs, caused by the provision in the League Rules which stipulates generally that player contracts shall be for a minimum of three years. The said provision, having already been in force one full season, has not been the subject of any complaints from any player or club,” the LMC posited.

The LMC assured APFON that the provision limiting the player contracts in the Nigeria Professional Football League to a minimum of three years was made in cognizance of the labour laws and employment in Nigeria with the aim of enhancing job security and protecting the rights and interests of the players they represent.

According to the LMC, the three-year minimum contract provision is without prejudice to the right of both parties to terminate the contract by mutual consent before the date of expiry, as enshrined in the Rules and also exempted some category of players from the three- year minimum contract.

"It does not apply to players who have played professional football for a total of 10 years or more - they may be contracted to play for not less than 3 months at a time; or players under the age of 18 years whose contracts must not be for more than 2 years".

Abubakar reminded APFON that it has in the past enjoyed the support of the LMC on players’ development and enlightenment, adding that APFON has unfettered access to the LMC and are always free to seek formal clarification on any issues before going to press and sending letters to clubs/players which can create unnecessary problems within the system.

Kano Pillars players attacked, shot on way to League game

Gambo Mohammed
Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) defending champions, Kano Pillars were attacked on their way to honor their league opener in Owerri.

SL10.ng put a call through to the media manager of Kano Pillars, Idris Malikawa and sounded very low, he said some of the players were shot.

"Yes it's true that the players were attacked at Abaji, some players were shot. Gambo Mohammed, Otekpa and a few others were shot. They are currently at a hospital in Lokoja,"Malikawa informed SL10.ng.

We (sl10.ng) shall confirm the names of the players and the current state of the players who are in the hospital.

Kano Pillars were to be the guest of Heartland at the Dan Anyim stadium in a week fixture of the NPFL 2013/2015.

SL10.ng just spoke to one of Kano Pillars players, Isaac Loute, and he informed that the team was attacked and some of the players were shot, but as we speak they are at a Federal hospital in Kogi State.

"We were attacked by armed robbers, they shot our players in the hand, and some were hit on the head," Isaac Loute told SL10.ng on phone.

"Gambo Mohammed, Otekpa Energy, Ekpai Ubong, Rubuen Ogbonaya who just joined Pillars from El-Kanemi Warriors, and then Muritala were all hit by bullets. Right now we are at the Federal hospital in Kogi," Loute said.

Kano Pillars Update: Emordi Grateful To God After Attack, LMC Postpone Game

The bus carrying Kano Pillars FC to a Nigeria Professional Football League away fixture against Heartland FC came under fire on Thursday afternoon.

The 18-man squad was headed to Owerri for the week 1 fixture of the 2014/15 season when it was attacked at Abaji, according to technical adviser of the club Felix Okey Emordi.

The five players injured during the attack are Super Eagles striker Gambo Muhammed, former Dream Team star Eneji Otekpa, defensive trojan Adamu Murtala, ex Elkanemi Warriors defender Reuben Ogbonnaya and wing wizard Ubong Ekpai.

“We ran into them and immediately they opened fire. One of them opened the door and forced it open. They then shot the boys, of which five were injured.”

“We thank Almighty God for there was no life lost, because it could have been lost. Immediately after the men of the underworld pulled the trigger we ran into the bush and we started coming to the hospital.”

SL10 reporter Abayomi Ademetan, at the Federal Medical Centre, where the injured players were being taken to, learnt that the armed robbers collected ransoms from players of the CAF Champions League campaigners.

“As they were shooting, they were asking for money and valuables. The boys co-operated with them and ran for their dear lives. I still thank God for sparing the lives of the players,” coach Emordi continued.

In the past, teams travelling on the road to prosecute league matches have been victims of the men of the underworld.

“It's a common phenomenon in the country. I'm not condemning the efforts of our law enforcement officers. They are trying their best. They need to do more to fish out the criminals."

SL10 reports, Gambo Mohammed was the most affected of the injured players as he was groaning in pains and might be out of action for a long time.

Eneji Otekpa, Adamu Murtala, Reuben Ogbonnaya and Ubong Ekpai should be back to action in a couple of weeks.

The LMC have already announced an indefinite postponement to their game scheduled for this weekend against Heartland, but all other matches will go ahead.

Punditry versus reality: Our League prediction challenge

How our in house pundit fared over the weekend

Fisayo Dairo lays claim to having watched the Nigerian League for twelve years and last weekend, Match day 6, he predicted outcomes of the league games... Let us see how he fared

1. @pillarsfc vs FC Taraba: Two teams that lost in Midweek face off. Pillars are yet to concede at home so ur guess is as good as mine. 2-0.

At least he got a win for the home side, Kano Pillars won 2-1, 1-0 to Fisayo

2. @EnuguRangersFC vs El-Kanemi. Boys are not smiling in Enugu but there should be some sort of respite as I expect them to win this. 2-1

Rangers International actually whacked El Kanemi 3-0. Fisayo was right as regards the win, 2-0 to Fisayo

3. Sunshine Stars vs Wikki Tourists. The Tourists have won two on the bounce but I don't think they can make it 3. Fatigue is there too. 3-1

Fisayo Dairo got close this time. He predicted a 3-1 win for Sunshine Stars, but the game ended 3-2. Good one. 3-0 to Fisayo

4. Abia Warriors vs Shooting Stars. Stars look for their 1st away goal this term but eh, don't think they'll get it. Warriors to edge it 1-0

Spot on. Fisayo predicted a 1-0 Abia Warriors win and it ended that way. Way to go. 4-0 to Fisayo

5. @EnyimbaFC vs @sharksfc1. Enyimba are off a crucial away win and a long distance journey. Do I expect any surprises? Yes, so I go for 1-1

Enyimba won this game 3-2, so our pundit gets it entirely wrong this time. 4-1 to Fisayo

6. Lobi Stars vs Giwa FC. I'm backing Justin Tenger's men for their 1st win of the season against the table toppers in Makurdi. 2-0

Draw specialists, Lobi Stars drew at home again, this time 1-1. Completely wrong, Fisayo… scores 4-2

 7. Bayelsa Utd vs Gabros. Epa Ogbeide is trying to keep it tight at the back now. Clean sheets in the last two games & I expect another. 1-0

Gabros put up a challenge of Champions in Oghara that even Fisayo could not envisage and ended the encounter 0-0. #Fail. Still 4-3 to Fisayo

8. Akwa United vs Dolphins. Baraje faces his former T.A Stanley Eguma. I think the Oga will show why he's Oga. I go for a draw sha. 0-0

Fisayo actually thought Dolphins would do the almost impossible and get a draw in Uyo, something that has not happened before in the top flight. Dolphins lost… #EpicFail. Now 4-4

9. Warri Wolves vs @HeartlandFC_ng. I believe the hosts have enough to edge this out. They need the boost before next weekend. 3-2

Warri Wolves won 2-0, now 5-4 to Fisayo

10. @KwaraUnitedFC vs Nasarawa Utd. Two under fire teams will battle in Ilorin but I back the hosts bcos Nasarawa are bad travellers. 2-1

Fisayo got the win right but not the exact scores as the game ended 1-0 to Kwara United. 6-4

Verdict

Fisayo Dairo started like a house on fire getting the first four results right, even getting the exact score line in one of them before his predictions went awry

However, he has done enough to deserve another shot at the prediction game for match day 7.

Nigeria Women Professional League preview

$
0
0
By Queen John

The wait is over for lovers of Women Football in Nigeria as the 2014/15 Nigerian Women Premier League season begins this weekend with some mouth-watering fixtures.

Sixteen (16) participating teams would slug it out this season as against 11 teams last season in what will be an abridged format.

Adamawa Queens return

Adamawa Queens who were granted a waiver last campaign, following insurgency claims cited by other clubs as reason for not honouring their games in the Adamawa state capital, will battle it out with Bayelsa Queens, Confluence Queens, Delta Queens, Pro League winners Fc Robo, Ibom Angels , newly promoted Martins Whyte Dove and Osun Babes  in Group A.

In Group B, it will be champions Rivers Angels, Pelican Stars, Edo Queens, Taraba Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, last season Federation Cup finalist Sunshine Queens, and two undecided teams that would have to wait for the approval from the NFF Executive Committee.

Rivers Angels won the league last season with a 100% home record, picking a total of 30 points from their respective home matches and recorded 2 away wins.

With the departure of key players in the team like Asisat Oshoala, Evelyn Nwabuokwu, Uchechi Sunday, and Ebere Orji it is yet to be seen if the Port Harcourt side can successfully defend their title this season.

Top scorer for last season, Amarachi Orjinma whose 17goals helped Pelican Stars finish second place in the league, is one player to watch but she has shifted her services to the League Champions, Rivers Angels. All attention will be on her if she can replicate her goal scoring form with the Port Harcourt club.

Opening Day Fixtures

On Saturday, Delta Queens will be at home against Confluence Queens in Oleh. The confident Kogi side will hope to avoid a repeat of a 4-0 defeat handed out to them last season in Oleh.

Osun Babes will also play host to Ibom Angels in a repeat of last season league opener which ended 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

Bayelsa Queens will hope to better last season’s poor performance when they travel to face Pro League winners, FC Robo in Lagos. Another debutant, Martins White Doves of Benin will be on the road to face Adamawa Queens in Yola.

In Group B, only two matches will be played this weekend as champions Rivers Angles and Federation Cup finalist Sunshine Queens of Akure will have to wait for the approval of NFF Executive Committee to know their opponents.

In the meantime, Edo Queens will be at home against Nasarawa Amazons, while FC Taraba will play host to Pelican stars in Jalingo. The corresponding fixture last season ended in a stalemate.

The wait is over and despite the lack of sponsorship and seeming relegation to the background in Nigerian Football, the women are back to display their footballing talents, express their passion into actions and prove once again that we are never short of the talents to replace those exiting the league.

Manchester City fan speaks on first Nigerian stadium experience

Deji Adeyemi and son at Stamford Bridge
A Nigerian born fan of Manchester City had his first experience in stadium in his country two months ago.

Deji Adeyemi whose twitter handle is @Bobskino made inquiries as to how he can watch a game involving Dolphins Football Club and was at the Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium to watch the double header on March 7 that had Dolphins play Kwara United and Sharks play Sunshine Stars

Deji whose only previous stadium experience had been at the Ettihad and Stamford Bridge told TodaySportsLive, an interactive Sports show on Radio that being a Nigerian who lived in Port Harcourt he wanted to have a stadium experience at the Liberation.

“I’m Nigerian. I do not think I have a choice than to support our clubs.

“Clubs in Europe have good packaging and that is why it is easy for us to support them from here, but we need to start supporting our own.

“If you go to Manchester, you do not find people supporting Enyimba so I decided to face my clubs here,” Deji said

Lounging with the wife and kids

Deji Adeyemi said he took his wife and kids to the stadium to watch the double header game that had Dolphins play Kwara United and Sharks play Sunshine Stars.

“I went to the stadium with my wife and kids and I must say we had fun that day,” He said excitedly.

“Before now I hadn’t watched a live match in Nigeria even though I had done that in Europe at the Stamford Bridge and Ettihad.

“We had fun, sat behind the Dolphins supporters club and enjoyed the way they were singing and dancing,” Adeyemi said.

“I think the club management and the Nigerian League need to do a lot n terms of packaging so we can have a lot more people coming to the stadium to watch games.

“I still do not have a Dolphins’ jersey yet but I hope to get one soon.”

Fear of Area Boys

There is this school of thought that says many people do not come to watch games in Port Harcourt because of the fear of Street urchins, also known as Area Boys.

Deji Adeyemi, however says he did not have that behind his mind as he took his family to the stadium for the league game.

“No, I wasn’t scared. A couple of my friends have been there and the reports I got from them showed there was really nothing to be scared off.

“It was a good experience. There was nothing to worry about, except, maybe the ticketing which I felt could have been better.”

“The way they sell tickets here is not standard. I’m used to making bookings online in Europe,” He added.
With Kelechi Iheanacho, Oct 2014

Little negatives

Adeyemi chose not to notice the negatives in that game but was full of praises for the fans.

“Both games ended goaless but the fans did not stop cheering. The attendance was poor though and I put it at about ten to fifteen percent of the capacity.

“People are not coming to watch matches. They must have their reasons and we need to find out what those reasons are

“Maybe people are scared of touts robbing them but from my experience on the day, I did not see any reason to fear because I saw tight security at the Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium,” Deji Adeyemi said.

Deji Adeyemi told naijafootball247.com that he would have loved to be at the Stadium for Sunday’s double header that will see Sharks play FC Taraba and Dolphins lock horns with Lobi Stars.

“Really, I would have loved to be there again after the experience of the last one but I am currently away at work. If there is a game next week, I will be there.”

Nigerian League prediction challenge

Shooting Stars FC, Pic by LMC Media
Fisayo Dairo tries his brains again on predicting results of League games to be played in Nigeria on Sunday, May 3, 2015.

After the games, we will see how well he performs

1. @sharksfc1 vs FC Taraba: Two teams that have gone 3 games without a win. Taraba remains a stingy side but I go for a home win. 1-0

2. Gabros vs @EnyimbaFC. Enyi did badly in Oriental derbies last term so have to check it. Mfon is in form but Okonkwo is stubborn. 0-0

3. Giwa FC vs Bayelsa Utd: My big call this weekend. I'm backing United to get a shock draw in Jos cos I think Giwa have overachieved. 1-1

4. @DolphinsFC vs @LobiStars. Lobi remains winless & they will surely remain so after Week 7, infact I expect them to lose in PH. 2-0

5. El-Kanemi "Strikers" vs Akwa Utd. I still expect a narrow home win for the hungry Warriors in Kano because Akwa have been sort awkward too. 1-0

6. 6. Wikki Tourists vs @EnuguRangersFC. Wikki have grown to be a free-scoring side and I think they will score well against the Antelopes. 3-1

7. @HeartlandFC_ng vs @SunshineFCAkure. Naze Millionaires wil defend their top spot as if the league ends tomorrow so I tip them to win. 2-1

8. Kwara United vs @pillarsfc. I'm feeling for United but sorry, I don't see them winning this. Pillars should get 1st away point(s). 2-2

9. Nasarawa Utd vs Abia Warriors. Straight home win cos United need it badly. No bragging words for the brave Ladan Bosso in Lafia. 2-1

“He gives chances to any one ready to play and if I am called upon again, I will take the chance,” Agbim said.

Agbim added that he does not expect an easy recall to the team just because of Stephen Keshi but will work his way back into the hearts of the national selectors.

ANGELS IN FLYING START TO LEAGUE

An inspired Mabel Effiom’s performance handed Rivers Angels a 4-0 win against new comers, Capital City Doves of Abuja in a Nigeria Women Premier League Week 1 rescheduled game at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Rivers Angels dominated the midfield and attacked early in the game with the inspired Effiom troubling the visitors with her darting runs and crosses from the left flank.

The former Ibom Angels full back, was playing in place of Ngozi Ebere who is on duty with the national team and made sure Ebere's absence was not felt in the game.

The Port Harcourt based side opened scores on 19 minutes when newly-signed striker from Finland, Ijeoma Obi rammed home a fantastic bicycle kick which left Oluwaseun Sanusi, in goal for Doves with no chance at all.

Two minutes later, the double champions increased the tally and this time around it was last season NWPL highest goal scorer, Amarachi Ojinma opening her account for the season.

The former Pelican stars forward got a just reward for her efforts after her shot was previously blocked by Sanusi taking advantage of a defensive error by the Abuja side to poke home.

Two soon became three in the 32nd minute as the hosts compounded their visitors' woes. A perfectly weighed cross from Mercy Amanze found centre back Ihuoma Onyebuchi who teed up Ijeoma Obi to bury it past Sanusi.

Capital City Doves, lacking a cutting edge, outmuscled in the midfield and could not find their way through the Rivers Angels defense on countless occasions.

With ten minutes into the second half, the referee disallowed a goal scored by Grace Henry who pounced on a spilled ball from Sanusi. She was adjudged to be in an offside position.

The home side however continued the game without any protest but so much attention was on the coach of Capital City Doves, Ngozi Ezeh who on three different intervals called on her players to the sidelines after they conceded a goal from Rivers Angels side.

In the 75th minute however, Rivers Angels got icing on their well baked cake with a free kick from 25 yards from Ulunma Jerome who connected the newly introduced Ijeoma Emenike. Emenike did brilliantly to find a relentless Mercy Amanze who headed into the net.

It wrapped up an efficient yet comfortable display for the Champions who were yet to kick a ball this term after they walked over Pelicans Stars in Calabar last weekend.

Angels coach delighted

Assistant coach of Rivers Angels, Whyte Ogbonda expressed his delight after the match but admitted they were missing their key players who are on national duty.

“We are missing the players in the national camp and if they were here we would have scored up to 10 goals.

“The standard of the game would have been higher than this but I’m happy because we wanted 3 points and at the end of the day they were able to get it.

“I’m happy they played to instruction and there is room for improvement,” said Ogbonda.

Coach of Capital City Doves, Ngozi Ezeh admitted she was not disappointed with the result.

“The girls tried their best. We just got into the league and we were not supposed to be in the league but I still believe these girls will still do wonders. I am not disappointed for what my girls played because its not easy to face the champions,” Ezeh said.

“I have to inject new players and encourage the little ones that can meet up the league when next they come for the return leg in Abuja you will hear a different result,” Ezeh concluded.

OSUN BABES SET TO DIM BAYELSA QUEENS

Meanwhile, high riding Bayelsa Queens of Yenegoa will this weekend meet their match in Ede when they face a victory thirsty Osun Babes of Osogbo.

The two teams who are yet to lose a match in the three weeks old league, would give the spectators much to cheer about.

The Osun Poly Ede pitch which was in a bad shape when the home team played their first match of the season, would surely wear a new look if the promises of the management of the Osun babes is anything to go by.

Coach of Bayelsa Queens, Rollanson Odeh, would have to deploy all his wealth of experience in this match if he hopes to leave the stadium with his head held high.

Elsewhere in Oleh, Delta Queens would compound the problems of FC Robo in the League.

The Dan Evuemena girls would want to take the revenge of their last week loss to Ibom Angels on the Robo girls. Confluence Queens will travel to Yola to tackle the Adamawa Queens, while Ibom Angels would welcome Martins White Doves in Uyo.

In Group B, It would be a game of two new comers at the Agege Township Stadium where City of David (COD) United Ladies will welcome Capital City Doves of Abuja.

Both teams have promised to give soccer crazy Lagosians much to cheer. Rivers Angels would host Nasarawa Amazons in Port Harcourt, while Edo Queens would play Taraba Queens.

The Star match of the group would be in Akure where Sunshine Queens and their guest Pelican Stars would do battle

Giwa FC duo claim LBA for April

Ibrahim Shuaibu
Giwa Fc head coach, Tony Bulus and striker Ibrahim Shuaibu, have emerged winners of the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) Manager and Player respectively for the month of April.

It is the first time that both men will be named winners of the prestigious award, which honours the best players and managers in the Glo Premier League.

Bulus claimed the manager's award by fending off close challenges from
Kennedy Boboye (stand-in Sunshine Stars head coach for Englishman Paul
Ashworth), Abdu Maikaba (Wikki Tourists) and Kadiri Ikhana (Enyimba).

The Giwa FC manager edged the rest of the pack by finishing the month
of April unbeaten after guiding his team to two wins, including an away win at Enugu Rangers.

Boboye, Maikaba and Ikhana could only help their teams to two wins apiece.

In the player's category, it was quite a battle among Shuaibu, Enyimba striker Mfon Udoh, Bayelsa United goalkeeper Bassey Akpan, Ubong Ekpai
of Kano Pillars and Wikki's Godwin Obaje.

However, the battle was down to three players - Shuaibu, Udoh and Akpan - and it was the Giwa FC striker who edged the others to claim the LBA for April after he scored two of his three goals at Rangers and Lobi Stars. His goals also helped his team to finish the month under review without a loss.

Though Udoh scored three goals, he fell just short of claiming the gong while Bayelsa United goalkeeper Akpan also had a big shout with three clean sheets against Gabros FC, Sharks and FC Taraba.

Bulus and Shuaibu will receive their awards later in May.
