Iheanacho couldn’t mark, says Manu

Coach of the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U20 team, Manu Garba has revealed some of the decisions he made during the just concluded FIFA World Cup.

Garba says he used Manchester City starlet, Kelechi Iheanacho sparingly because he couldn’t track back or mark when they were without the ball.

What irked Nigerians the most was that Iheanacho did not play at all in the 2ndround game against Germany but Garba explained why he made that decision to naijafootball247.com.

“In the match against Brazil Kelechi was not recovering very well to mark even though that was the role we gave to him to support the midfield and attack.

“But because he didn’t play that role well we decided to use Success later in the game against Germany even though the weather also affected him,” Garba said.

“We put the loss to Brazil behind us and decided to start our next games with the teams that played friendly matches before the World Cup and we won the next two group games.

“On the day of the game against Germany, it was three degrees centigrade and I believe the weather affected our team, even though people are using that loss to say things about us,” Garba said.

Lessons learned

Garba admits he has learned his lessons from coaching Nigeria at the World Cup and will be a different coach if he ever gets another opportunity.

“We have learned some things. A good student learns from experience.

“There are lots of things to consider, especially the fact that we did not have our foreign based players released to us on time. We had already registered them for the World Cup before their clubs released them to us,” Garba said.

“I have a good record with the national teams though as I have only lost three competitive games from my days at the Under seventeen team to the under twenties.”

Going forward

Manu Garba told naijafootball247.com that he believes the players in the Flying Eagles team are young and can go through the ranks to the Super Eagles.

“We were the youngest team at the tournament and I expect these boys to make a gradual progress up the ranks.

“I expect some of them to be at the All Africa Games this year and Olympic Games next year and also the Super Eagles in future,”

How Ifeanyi Ubah punished his team for losing to Heartland

Ifeanyi Ubah
The drama was bizarre in Port Harcourt on Wednesday night after FC Ifeanyi Ubah lost to Heartland in a league game.

Spectators had already resigned themselves to seeing the points shared when 86thminute, substitute Saibou Badarou headed home Ubido's free kick.

Heartland won the game 1-0 but that was when the drama started.

As the FC Ifeanyi Ubah players headed to their hotel to pass the night, a call came “from above” that they should proceed to Nnewi that night as punishment to the team for losing a game the boss thought they should win.

Port Harcourt based journalist, Jessica Amadi, tweeting from the handle, @Isiokpobabe posted just after the game, “FC Ifeanyi Ubah players and officials are heading back to Nnewi this night simply because they lost their game to Heartland FC #punishment”

She tweeted a few minutes later, “some of the players refused to join the team heading back and will have 20k deducted from their salary according to reports”

An official of the club who spoke to naijafootball247.com under the condition of anonymity confirmed that they were supposed to spend the night in Port Harcourt until the phone call came in.

“That was not the plan. We had paid accommodation fees for the night and were supposed to leave in the morning but Oga (the boss) called and was angry that we lost the game and said we must leave that night,” the official said.

“It was to serve as punishment to us because he was angry we lost the game.”

But having already paid for rooms that night, did they get a refund for the rooms?

“We didn’t ask for a refund. There was no time to. The order came that we should leave immediately. Besides, which hotel will give you refunds at 7.45pm. But for oga, it was not about the money we had already paid but because he was angry that we lost the game and he wanted to punish us,” the official said.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah were on a roll until recently when they won 4-1 at Elkanemi.
Ever since that spectacular win, they have been on a losing spree, 1-0 at home to Wikki Tourists and 1-0 away to Heartland.

Mitko Dobrev was sacked as coach of the team after the loss to Wikki Tourists and former Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh was in charge for their 1-0 loss to Heartland in Port Harcourt.

#OctopusFiscosports believes there will be GOALS APLENTY this weekend. Infact, it'll be close to a record haul this term.

: 1. FC Taraba vs @KwaraUnitedFC. Two struggling sides here but I'll call this a home win. Should be the final straw for Coach Abdulrahman. 2-1

: 2. @DolphinsFC vs Wikki. Wikki are the 2nd best travelers in the league so will make life difficult but I go for a 3-2 home win.

: 3. Giwa vs Heartland in Kaduna. Giwa needs no introduction but many may not know what Heartland are capable of. A 2-2 draw for me.

: 4. Ifeanyiubah vs 3SC: Winless & Scoreless in their last 2 games, IFY should end 3SC's unbeaten run. I go for a 3-0 scoreline. #GloNPFL

: 5. @sharksfc1 vs Nasarawa Utd: Sharks are back home & should get the 3 pts mainly bcos Nasarawa are awful travelers. 1-0 #OctopusFiscosports

: 6. Enyimba vs Abia Warriors: I'm backing the visitors to give us an away win thereby ending Enyi's unbeaten run. 1-2 #OctopusFiscosports

: 7. Bayelsa Utd vs Warri Wolves: Tempted to call an away win (like last season) but I'll go for a result both teams would like. 2-2

: 8. Lobi vs Sunshine: I'm going for a home win here. Sunshine has been awful away of recent though they put up some fight. 2-1

: 9. Akwa Utd vs Rangers: Will a winner emerge at the Nest of Champions at last? I think not. Another draw. 3-3 #OctopusFiscosports

: 10. Kano Pillars vs El-Kanemi: Another straight home win here I reckon though Warriors are familiar with Kano. 3-1 to Pillars.

Sunday Oliseh and Amaju Pinick
The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed it is in talks with former Super Eagles’ captain Sunday Oliseh with regards to the vacant position of the team’s Head Coach.

At the weekend, the NFF terminated the appointment of another former captain, Stephen Keshi, over breaches of core terms of his contract.

Following the encouragement of a team of the NFF Technical and Development Committee that is working on filling the vacant position, Sunday Oliseh met with NFF President Amaju Pinnick in London on Tuesday.

“An offer has been made, and there is understanding, but we have to work out the final details of the agreement in a few days. Of course, the Executive Board has to give approval for his appointment based on the final terms to be agreed,” said Felix Anyansi-Agwu, chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee.

Thenff.com understands that Oliseh will come with a Foreign Technical Assistant, whose job description will centre around development programmes, and who will work with Clubs’ Youth Teams and certified Academies towards developing the game from the grassroots.

Current stand-in Coach Salisu Yusuf will also be in the new team, but with greater devotion to the home-based team, otherwise known as Super Eagles B, and will be the interface between the technical crew and the home boys.

Oliseh is expected to come up with a five –year developmental plan to fashion a unique playing and coaching philosophy for all the National Teams, and will for this purpose, interface regularly with coaches of those teams.

“We are also looking at how he will periodically organize clinics and seminars for coaches of Clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League, probably once in a month, so as to strengthen the playing philosophy across board. A robust youth development programme, elite player development strategy and performance programmes to drive higher standards, among other core sustainable development programmes, are also part of the proposal,” Anyansi-Agwu added.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick said: “Sunday Oliseh has vast experience and immense knowledge of the game, and will certainly add value to what we are doing. He has bought into our vision and objectives towards the development of Nigeria football. He will command the respect of the players and we trust he has the temperament to work harmoniously with the Technical and Development Committee, the Technical Directorate and the Technical Study Group.

“On our part at the NFF, we will give him all the support to succeed as we have been giving to all our coaches. Subject to the approval of the NFF Executive Committee, we will conclude negotiations by weekend and he will be unveiled next week.”

Oliseh, 40, is presently a FIFA instructor, and runs a consultancy that trains and assesses coaches worldwide. He is also member of FIFA Technical Study Group.

He was in the Nigeria squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 1994, and played in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup final competitions, with the Super Eagles reaching the Round of 16 in both. He was also in the Nigeria U-23 side that won Africa’s first Olympic football gold in Atlanta 19 years ago.

Oliseh played for Reggiana, FC Cologne, Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, VFL Bochum and RC Genk in a magnificent professional career, during which he played under some of the best coaches in the universe.

He won 63 caps for Nigeria between 1993 and 2002, picking up Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze medals.

Oliseh holds a UEFA Pro License, and coached Belgian lower division club, Vervietois between 2008 and 2009.

Giwa FC striker gets first ever League Bloggers Award

Abdul Maikaba
Giwa FC striker, Ocheme Edoh and Wikki Tourists gaffer, Abdu Maikaba, have emerged winners of the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) Player and Manager for the month of June respectively.

Edoh and Maikaba were picked as the top performers in the Glo Premier League for the month under review among other top contenders nominated for the awards in the player and manager categories.

The Giwa FC forward beat the trio of Bright Ejike (Heartland) as well as goalkeepers Sani Haliru (Wikki Tourists) and Itodo Akor (Enugu Rangers) to claim the LBA Player for June.

The battle for the player's award was whittled down to Edoh and Ejike though the two goalkeepers, Akor and Haliru, kept three clean sheets each to influence their teams' superb form in June.

Edoh, however, edged Ejike for the award as he scored in every match he featured in for Giwa FC in June despite being tied on four goals apiece with the Heartland striker.

It was a tight race between Edoh and Ejike for the player's gong as the number of away goals scored by the two strikers was taken into consideration, and the Giwa FC man did enough to best his Heartland counterpart. Edoh scored twice on the road at Dolphins and Kano Pillars while Ejike managed just one away goal at Sharks for the month under review.

In the manager's category, Maikaba always looked favourite after the conclusion of the Glo Premier League matches for the month of June.

The only challenge for Maikaba came from Enyimba head coach, Kadiri Ikhana and Enugu Rangers manager, Imama Amapakabo.

But Maikaba guided the Tourists to an unbeaten run in June and masterminded his two away successes at FC Taraba and FC Ifeanyiubah who had at the time held a 100 percent run at home. Wikki Tourists finished with 10 points - more than any team in June.

The teams of Amapakabo and Ikhana also enjoyed unbeaten runs in June but Rangers and Enyimba could only muster nine and eight points respectively.

Edoh and Maikaba will be presented their LBA Player and Manager for June in the coming days.

Godbless Asamoah
Ghana born, Godbless Asamoah wants to enjoy the Nigerian League in his time at Dolphins FC.

Asamoah who played for Medeama Stars before his move to the 1997, 2004 and 2011 champions of the Nigerian League told NPFL.ng com that he believes he will excel.

“This is my first time in Nigeria and I’m still trying to catch up with how things are done here,” Asamoah told Naijafootball247.com.

“I’d been in the team for some time but my first game was the substitute appearance in Jalingo against Taraba United which we drew.

“It was a game we wanted to win but unfortunately, we drew, which is not bad,” Asamoah said.

“Sometimes the coach does not use me in the role I want but it doesn’t matter as long as I support my team. I’m here to help my team and that is what I want to do.”

Asamoah told Naijafootball247.com that he did his due diligence on Dolphins before he eventually signed.

“When I was about to come, I checked them out online and I know they are a big side and I want to get glory with them.

“As a player you always want to win trophies and other stuff so I am here to support the team so they can go far and even win the title,” Asamoah said.

Godbless Asamoah got his first Dolphins goal when they drew 1-1 against Sharks at the Liberation Stadium on match day 11.

It was an 87th minute equalizer.

He scored again in Kano against Kano Pillars in a game that ended 2-2.

He also scored in the 3-1 loss to Heartland in Oba.

Chin up, Ideye wants Baggies to remember his goals

$

After a below average first season in the English top flight with West Bromwich Albion, record signing, Brown Ideye says he has buried the ghost of the past and is ready for the challenge ahead.

Prolific scorer for Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland, Sochaux in France and Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, but his adventure in England didn’t quite turn out right because after thirty games in all competitions, Brown Ideye only had seven goals to his name.

Before his sojourn in England, Ideye had played 249 professional football matches, twenty-one in Nigeria and 228 in Europe.

He had also scored 105 league goals including 8 for Ocean Boys, but at West Bromwich Albion, there were no easy days for him.

“It was really tough for me,” Ideye told Naijafootball247.com.

“The thing is that, in all that happened last season, I never looked down on myself.

“It was tough and hard but never did I lose confidence in myself. I knew they were just tough times that players normally pass through so I told myself I would work harder,” Ideye said.

Tango with the fans

At a stage in Ideye’s West Bromwich Albion career last season, some fans of the club turned against him and his twitter mentions were filled with curse words, most of them insinuating he was a flop and not good enough for the club.

As the club’s record signing, they expected more from him than he gave the club.

“People expect you to perform in every game and score in every game and that is simply what happened last season,” he said.

“I have the same mentality and I push myself, I give my best and I keep pushing until I get what I want, which is goals to help my team win.

“It’s hard because sometimes the fans do not understand what you are going through at every point so they just say what they want, based on what they feel.

“Some of them still think I am not the real deal and I received a lot of insults but people do not know what you are passing through. It’s part of football. They just see you from the outside and express their views, but those things that happened last season just made me stronger.

“I still believe last season went well under the circumstances. I have no regrets at all.

“I always find a way to work hard and for the team. Things were not always the best for me but I know I always worked hard and now I hope for the best this new season.”

At his home in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in June, just before he jetted off to England to join his club for the pre-season formalities, Ideye didn’t look like one who was scared or bothered about the challenge ahead.

He certainly, also did not look like someone weather beaten by his travails of the previous season. He seemed Happy-go-lucky, expecting to be a big hit when the season resumes.

Returning from the gymnasium he told Naijafootball247.com, “I will just make believe this is my first season with the club because one problem I had last year was that I didn’t join them for the pre-season camp and tour.”

He continued, “I’ve looked forward to the off season and pre-season and I believe this will be a good year for me.

"The fans will remember my goals.”

West Bromwich Albion in the USA

True to it, Ideye made it to the team’s pre-season camp in the United Kingdom and was part of the tour of the United States where he played in all three games for the club.

In the 3-1 loss to Austrian champions, Red Bull Salzburg, he came on as a 50thminute substitute for Victor Anochebe, while in the 3-1 loss to Orlando he was taken off in the 50th minute for Anichebe.

In their final game of the tour, a 2-1 win over Charleston, Ideye, who came on in the 45th minute for Anichebe scored in the 82nd minute after Saido Berahinho had put his side ahead in the 42nd minute of the encounter.

Going to the Middle East

But all these would have counted for nothing if Ideye had moved to the Middle East on Transfer Deadline Day at the end of January 2015.

Suddenly the football world woke up with the news that West Bromwich Albion had agreed terms with a Qatari club, Al Gharafa in a deal worth about $5.9m and Ideye would soon be on his way to have his medicals, but he stayed back and started a goal scoring run in the League and FA Cup in February.

In a six day spell, he scored four times with goals against Burnley and Swansea City in the League and two against West Ham United in the FA Cup

“It was tough. Every day I walked on the street people looked at me and said I would be going to Qatar, but some of those things toughened me.

“I never thought of leaving England to Qatar. England was always my first choice destination when I left Ukraine and I wanted to come here to perform and play football. It was never in my plans to leave for Qatar or any other league and I did not want to go,” he said.

Pulis’ great words of knowledge

With manager, Irvine losing his job in the side and Tony Pulis joining the fray, it was always going to be tough for a player who was never really in the plans of the former coach.

And Ideye agrees that it was tough at first, but says he had a straight up talk with the new gaffer.

“After Pulis came he called me into his office and asked if I really wanted to play for him and of course I said yes.

“We spoke about the club and he told me everything will be okay if I do my job well and train hard.”

Ideye continued that he had never had doubts about his capabilities as a footballer and a top goal scorer.

“I never doubted that I could do the business for West Bromwich Albion.

“The coach told me he believes in me and I can turn things around. I didn’t get all the goals I wanted but there is always this new season,” he enthused.

Another bite of the International cake?

After being shut out of the Nigeria National Team by former coach, Stephen Keshi, Ideye says he wants another bite of the cherry.

“I expect to return to the national team. Why not? Every player wants to play for his country so anytime I am called up to honour an invitation I will come down and be hundred percent glad to play,” he said.

But he also knows that his footballing future is tied to how well his goals count for West Bromwich Albion when the season starts on August 8, 2015.

I will be a different Ideye this season. I will push myself to that height people know me to be and I will do better than last season.”

It all starts on August 10 at the Hawthorns against Manchester City.

Imama Amapakabo. The boy is now a man

For six months in 2014, Imama Amapakabo wore his beards long.

He wasn’t trying to rekindle the pretentious cold-war Marxist days of a 70’s Nigeria, or was he casting for a role in a biblical documentary. No.

Mr. Imama grew his beards, grey and black all of them, to protest the inability of young football coaches to break into the helm of the fraternity in Nigeria. His mane was symbolic; the young adult that kept goal for Nigeria at a youth championship in the 80’s, was angry at his prolonged initiation rites into the coaching fraternity in the country, he felt he had strayed on the sidelines for too long with a clean chin, the world only recognizes adults with a full beard. That did the trick.

It was refreshing to see Imama shave off his greying beards. But more refreshing than seeing a man lose facial hairs was his elevation into the top job at Rangers International of Enugu.

After successful internships at Sharks, Enyimba and Rangers, the man fondly called Chief, has the opportunity to show the league what he’s made of, asides growing a rich mane and carrying a wooden slate during matches.

But what can Imama do at Rangers? A club supposedly with a hex hanging round their neck when it comes to winning trophies.
For one, he would entrench an attacking style of football at the Enugu club. That has always been his mantra and approach to the game. He favours a swift passing style that seeks to transition to attacking modes quickly. At the half-way point of the campaign, Rangers have scored 21 goals and conceded the same number. But knowing Imama, he wouldn’t be too worried about how much his team ships in, as long as they always outscore their opponents. That much was evident during their qualification for the last eight of the Federations Cup, a game they led three times to win 3-2 against Kwara United.

But that is where the rub is. Against such teams, the game of goals might be easier to achieve, but no team can effectively win a championship without a solid defence. A lecture Imama and his Rangers team received first hand when they lost 1-2 at home to Enyimba. Coach Amapakabo only has to look at his former employers to learn a thing about organizing a team for the long haul of a 38 game championship.

But the Federations Cup he can win. And what pleasure it would give him to announce his presence in the comity of football coaches with a trophy at the end of his first campaign in charge.

With top guns Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Heartland and Dolphins all out, Rangers play El Kanemi Warriors for a place in the last four knowing that this is a great chance to bury the ghosts of that generation long trophy-less regime.

Whatever the outcome of this season for the club, for Imama Amapakabo it would mean a coming of age. An initiation long overdue.  Afterall, according to an Etche proverb, when a man can introduce himself without pointing to his beards, then he has truly arrived.

The clubs had their grounds decertified from Match Day11 after they were inspected and adjudged not fit to host Glo Premier League matches. The clubs were directed to repair the observed defects and notify the LMC for further inspection.

The LMC in the circular said it has received and reviewed the preliminary reports from field inspections which shows that there has been appreciable level of improvement towards meeting the required standard required for top level league football. Baba Ganaru
Coach to forfeit 50% sign-on due, pay N0.2m fine

Kano Pillars and their new Coach, Baba Ganaru have been fined separately by the League Management Company (LMC) for breaching the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Rules and Framework 2014/2015 Season.

In its recent exercise off Summary Jurisdiction, the LMC cited Ganaru for breaching the Code of Conduct for Managers and Coaches as contained in Appendix B of the NPFL Rule Books by accepting to enter into negotiation with Kano Pillars without first obtaining the consent of his employer, Nasarawa United.

Ganaru’s sanction for this breach includes the payment of a fine of N200, 000, forfeiture of one month salary to Nasarawa United being one month salary in lieu of notice as stipulated in his contract with the club and a further forfeiture of N5 million, being 50% of his sign-on as agreed in his contract with Nasarawa United for the 2014/2015 season since he has only served half of his full season contract with the club.

The Coach though, has a right to submit to the decision or elect to have his case heard by a commission in which case he has 48 hours to communicate his objection in writing to the LMC.

For failing to obtain permission of Nasarawa United before entering into negotiation with Coach Ganaru for the position of Technical Adviser, Kano Pillars was charged with breach of Code of Conduct for Clubs as contained in Appendix D of the NPFL Rule Book.

Kano Pillars was fined N0.5m for contravening the Rules and will pay N2m as compensation to Nasarawa United within two weeks. Pillars have 48hours to submit to the Summary Jurisdiction as exercised by the LMC and pay the fines or appear before a Commission.

The LMC decisions came as a result of a formal petition lodged by Nasarawa United on the contracting of their Coach by Kano Pillars without following the laid down rules for such transaction between clubs, coaches and players and a review of the documentation on the transaction submitted to the LMC by Kano Pillars which confirmed a breach of the Rules.

Enyimba hold Rangers to go top of Glo League

Christian Obiozor, didn't play for Enyimba
Former CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba, moved into the summit of the Glo Premier League (Nigeria Professional Football League) for the first time this season after forcing southeast neighbours, Rangers, to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Pre-match analysis favoured Enyimba to complete the double on Rangers due to their impressive run in the top division this season so far, and the fact that they had made stellar additions to their intimidating squad.

Enyimba coach, Kadiri Ikhana, gave mid-season signing, Musa Najere, his debut in the blue colours of the club while record league goalscorer, Mfon Udoh, returned to the match day squad for the first time since May.

Coach of Rangers, Imama Amapakabo, also surprisingly gave out-of-favour Super Eagles goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim the nod ahead of Itodo Akor in the startlist.

Rangers made the first impression as Onoriode Odah should have given them the lead but Enyimba keeper Femi Thomas went down well to make a one-handed save from a one-on-one situation.

But Odah made amends for his earlier miss by scooping a header over Thomas for the opening goal just nine minutes after kick-off. It was 1-0 to Rangers with Enyimba faithful stunned into silence.

It took the Peoples Elephant 28 minutes to restore parity. A well-planned move by Enyimba around the box freed Markson Ojobo on the right, who squared into the near post for Najere to convert unmarked past Agbim to put the score at 1-1.

That was the much the game produced in terms of goals as the two teams shared the points. Enyimba have now opened a point lead at the top of the league table having earned 37 points while Rangers stay rooted in 10th place with 28 points.

Leaders before match day 20, Sunshine Stars, dropped to second place after suffering a shock one-nil defeat at FC Taraba. Stephen Adah scored from a rebound just before half time after Ibrahim Sanusi's penalty kick struck the woodwork and bounced into play for the striker to tap home.

Another team in the top-four, Wikki, also failed to win by playing out a goalless draw with Heartland. Wikki are now third while Heartland remain in fifth place.

Giwa FC eased past Kwara United by a lone goal in Jos through Charles Henlong's second half goal. The win takes the Jos-based club to fourth position with 34 points.

League defending champions, Kano Pillars, edged Lobi Stars 2-1 to give their new coach, Mohammed Baba Ganaru a welcome win. Rabiu Ali and Shehu Shagari scored for Pillars in the opening 35 minutes before Tony Okpotu netted Lobi's goal three minutes into the second half. Pillars have climbed into seventh place but Lobi have now dropped into the bottom-four.

Shooting Stars held out well at El-Kanemi for 65 minutes before succumbing to Abraham Audu's goal that proved to be the winner for the Maiduguri club.

Two other matches ended in score draws of 1-1. FC Ifeanyiubah held Abia Warriors in a derby while Akwa United had to wait until added time to see Aniekpeno Udoh's goal cancel Bayelsa United's lead.

Aigbogun, Effiong emerge LBA July winners

$

Ndifreke Effiong
Paul Aigbogun of Warri Wolves and Ndifreke Effiong of Abia Warriors
have been named the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) Manager and Player
for the month of July.

The two men emerged top performers in the Glo Premier League for the
month under review ahead of the other actors in the Nigerian top
flight.

Aigbogun had to fend off impressive performances from Kadiri Ikhana of
Enyimba and Ladan Bosso of Abia Warriors for the manager's award for
the month of July.

After reviewing the five rounds of games (between match days 15 and
19) for July, Aigbogun guided Wolves to four wins including one away
but saw his team suffer one loss, being a 0-2 loss at Bayelsa United
on match day 16.

Though Ikhana led Enyimba to two away wins in July at Kwara United and
Enugu Rangers as well as a 2-2 draw in the Abia Derby against city
rivals, Abia Warriors in the mix of their five games saw them amass 10
points, two less than Aigbogun's team.

Bosso also could only guide his men to garner 10 points and thereby
fell short of beating his Warri Wolves counterpart, Aigbogun, to the
manager's award for July. Heartland gaffer, Bethel Orji, was in the
running for the same category until disciplinary issues against Kano
Pillars, where he was sent off for dissent, knocked him out of the top
performers.

Effiong, in the player's category, had to contend with a long list of
impressive performers for the month of July. But the LBA whittled down
the list to three including Enyimba striker, Christian Obiozor and
Akwa United's Nnamso Edo.

The Abia Warriors attacking midfielder, who can also play as a winger,
was a central figure in his club's good run in July and scored five
goals in five matches for the month under review including one goal on
the road.

Obiozor and Edo came close with their contributions for their teams'
display as they scored four and three goals respectively.

Aigbogun and Effiong are the fifth set of winners of the LBA this
season and they will be presented their awards later in August.
