Gernot Rohr
Gernot Rohr has been offered a two year contract by the Nigeria Football Federation following the Super Eagles’ qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year.

Franco- German, Rohr got a two year deal in August 2016 and Amaju Pinnick, president of the NFF explained that one of the conditions to get an extension was to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup.

According to Pinnick, the resolve of the Federation’s leadership to ensure there are no distractions of any size or complexion around Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup preparation and participation informed the offer of a fresh, two –year contract to Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr.

In qualifying for the World Cup, Nigeria thoroughly overhauled a “Group of Death” spanking 2012 AFCON winners Zambia home and away and earning four points from home-and-away clashes with fellow 2014 World Cup finalists Cameroon and Algeria. Second –placed Zambia finished six points behind the Super Eagles.

We have decided to confront head-on any possible area of conflict or controversy, and fully resolve each and every possible friction point well ahead of the competition,” Pinnick said.

After signing the agreement on payment to the team from expected FIFA income, the next stage was to take care of the Technical Adviser. He has done very well and does not need to go into the World Cup uncertain of his future,” stated Pinnick.

The 64 –year old Rohr, a former Germany defender, flaunts a sterling record with the Super Eagles, winning seven of 12 matches and drawing four in his 15 months in charge so far. His only loss was the 0-2 reverse to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a 2019 AFCON qualifier in Uyo in June 2017.

Under him, the Eagles have beaten Tanzania, Zambia (twice), Algeria, Togo, Cameroon and two –time world champions Argentina, and drawn with Senegal, Corsica, Cameroon and Algeria.

Following the 1-0 defeat of Zambia in Uyo on 7th October that guaranteed Nigeria’s place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Rohr, whose qualifying squad has been declared the youngest of all 32 finalists, told thenff.com: “I love working with this group. I am delighted being at the head of such a wonderful, level –headed and ambitious squad.”

After signing a two–year contract with the NFF last year, Rohr told thenff.com: “I have a German heart – the heart of a winner. I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but to get to the latter stages of the competition.”

Nigeria drawn against perennial World Cup conquerors, Argentina again

Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi
For the 5thtime in six, Nigeria will play against Argentina in the group stage of a FIFA World Cup as the draws signified in Russia on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be in Group D against Argentina, Iceland and Croatia at the World Cup in Russia.

Friday’s Final Draw in Moscow also paired neighbours Spain and Portugal in the same Group B, alongside Spain’s North African neighbours Morocco as well as Iran, while Brazil, Mexico, Sweden and Korea Republic will battle out in a very interesting Group F.

Nigeria played against Argentina in the group phase of the FIFA World Cup in 1994, 2002, 2010 and 2014, losing narrowly on each occasion. The venue was Foxboro Stadium, Boston in 1994 (2-1 Argentina), Ibaraki Arena in 2002 (1-0 Argentina), Ellis Park, Johannesburg in 2010 (1-0 Argentina) and Porto Alegre in 2014 (3-2 Argentina).

However, in a friendly game on Russian soil (Krasnodar) on 14th November (only 17 days ago), the Super Eagles came from two goals down to defeat the two –time world champions 4-2.

Argentina won the FIFA World Cup title in 1978 and 1986, and were losing finalists in Italy in 1990 (they lost to Germany courtesy of a late penalty) and in Brazil in 2014 (beaten in extra time by Germany).

In Russia, the Super Eagles’ first match will be against Croatia at the 35,000 –capacity Kaliningrad Stadium on Saturday, 16th June 2018 at 9pm (Kaliningrad time).

Zlatko Dalic is coach of Croatia and top stars include Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Rakitic, Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic.

Croatia had to qualify through a play –off, in which they dismissed Greece.

In that country’s first –ever outing at the FIFA World Cup, Croatia surprised all by taking the bronze medals, powered by Davor Suker. But the country has failed to make it out of the group phase in her three appearances in the finals since then.

For their second match, Nigeria will fly to Volgograd, where they take on Iceland at the 45,000 –capacity Volgograd Arena on Friday, 22nd June 2018. Time is 6pm.

Iceland is making a first appearance at the FIFA World Cup, and is the smallest country ever to qualify for the finals. The country has a population of 335,000. Iceland shocked the whole of Europe last year summer, reaching the quarter –finals of the European Championship in France. Heimir Hallgrimsson is coach and star player is Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Iceland were actually in the same European qualifying group with Croatia, and topped the pool to condemn the Croatians to a play –off against Greece.

Nigeria’s final group phase game is against Argentina on Tuesday, 26th June 2018 and the venue is the 68,000 –capacity Saint Petersburg Stadium, the second biggest venue at the finals. Time is 9pm, same time that Croatia and Iceland will be battling at the Rostov Arena.

The opening match of Russia 2018 will be between Russia and Saudi Arabia, starting 6pm at the 81,000 –capacity Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow – the venue that will also host the Final Match on 15th July 2018.

Oyibo wall, Jet Li for North Korea and Star Wars at Russia 2018

The Oyibo Wall may be a factor for the Super Eagles
Oluwafemi Balogun

Well it’s no longer breaking news that the World Cup draw has been done unless you are way under a rock. A lot of people really are, though.

My first reaction as a Nigerian was “Argentina again” well Nigeria have played the Albiceleste Five (5) times in (6) World Cups but I will come back to this, first of:

Group A

I consider this one an easy group, I think Egypt one of Africa’s representatives at this year’s World Cup would do well.

Host Russia need Akinfeev, their goalkeeper to just keep a clean sheet, Uruguay needs Suarez back on form quickly and luckily Cavani is scoring goals for PSG, some
might say aging team that’s another story.

For the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia they basically have to enjoy their World Cup experience because they unfortunately find themselves in in a rather not smooth group. Well you expect the host Russia to get to the next round and maybe Uruguay and Egypt
battle for the next slot.

Group B

The opening game of this group will just make you exclaim. Portugal against
Spain not going to be an easy game but I think they will both you qualify
from this group.

Morocco, another representative from Africa I don’t think they would have wanted this group but some people called them the strongest team from Africa going to Russia. Iran “hmm” hope they don’t turn to the weeping boys.

Group C

This one has a mixture of everything including the smallest continent Australia.

The fire powers of France should be too much for the other teams, Peru, Denmark and Australia just have to struggle for who comes second but I’m tipping Peru for greatness as they have a peculiar play pattern similar to every South American team.

Group D
Who can forget the Viking chant of Iceland?

Well I started my analysis with this group. Do Argentina need an introduction? I don’t think so.

They are once again paired with one familiar team in Nigeria and Lionel Messi would want to finally clinch that World Cup Trophy.

For Nigeria there is so much belief among the fans at home that their team can go as far as the semi final round with a young squad, a powerful attack and a famous “oyibo wall” in defence.

Iceland making their World Cup debut would be hoping to bring their Euro Cup success to Russia.

Croatia a team with midfield maestro, Luka Modric and a potent attacking set
up a lot of people expect to cause damage.

Group E
How many goals will Neymar score?

First game sees the Samba boys take on the Swiss National Team and then Costa Rica against Serbia.

Honestly, this group doesn’t excite me as I would have loved stiffer opponents for the Brazilians.

I just keep dreaming about the number of goals Neymar would score.

For the Serbians, familiar weather and faces might be an advantage to them if they can make use of it.

For Costa Rica, I honestly see them taking maybe just a point or two out of this group.

Group F
Sadly, Jet Li will not play for Korea

Germany, Sweden, Mexico and Korea Republic in one group, so how many goals do you think the Machines will score here?

Maybe Klose should be brought back to increase his World Cup tally.

Sweden? Well they stopped Italy from jumping on a plane to Russia so you expect them to make the other teams notice them, right?

So should Zlatan come back? I don’t know, maybe you do. For Mexico first I
want to see the famous Mexican wave and the huge mariachi hats but then the Mexicans are not ticking all the right boxes for me right.

However, we must remember their goal keeper, Ochoa who was rumoured to have six fingers but he didn’t.

It’s another World Cup and he could inspire his compatriots to a round of sixteen stage.

Korea Republic? Yes! Beautiful people and No! Jet Li doesn’t play for them but I expect them to cause an upset in this group.

You can probably call them underdogs and true to it, the Koreans would surprise a lot of
People.

Group G

May the Force be with Tunisia and Panama
The Red Devils of Belgium qualified easily for the World Cup and they will
still easily qualify out of this group.

Apart from the three lions of England, maybe they can win the World Cup this time around.

The three lions are the only tough opposition the Belgians would face. Tunisia and Panama may the force be with them( If you watch Star Wars you will understand).

Group H

This is one group that excites me. Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan play an
exciting brand of football.

Senegal a star studded African team known for its fast paced attackers would need a fully fit Sadio Mane.

Colombia? Remember their last World Cup where James Rodriguez was a shinning light well he could reignite that light for the Colombians.

Japan are no minnows in the Asian continent and will be a hard nut for any team in this group to crack.

Top on the table Poland a high scoring team and no strangers to the big stage, they have quality upfront and well as behind.

Honestly I can’t tell who tops or comes second in this group.

Well, at this point it would be foolhardy to think you can predict who wins the World Cup or who tops each group because surprises are part of the game.

Let us enjoy the banter for the next six months and most of all remember that in Russia, there will be the football, the cold, the fans interaction (thank Goodness England and Russia are not in the same group) and of course a winner eventually.

7 Minutes with China: How to punish the dead

$
0
0
Sometime in the early 90s, 1994 to be precise, a Nigerian club, Iwuayanwu Nationale, now Heartland were returning from a CAF Champions League or Cup of Champions Clubs match as it was known then.

They had played in Tunisia against Esperance and lost 3-0 but their Oriental Airlines Flight was forced to make an emergency landing at the Tamanrasset airport in Algeria when the pilot noticed some engine problems.

Two of Nigeria’s best players of that generation in the home league, Uche Ikeogu and Omale Aimounwansa died in the incident.

I seriously doubt that there is anything in the camp of Heartland today that serves as a remembrance to those two gallant soldiers. I am not sure any member of the Heartland team up to the club chairman/ General Manager knows this story.

They actually died representing a Nigerian football club in the search to win the then elusive CAF Champions League trophy?

There is also the case of Kayode Oluremi, a member of the Nigerian silver winning team at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games who was involved in a fatal motor accident which claimed his life.

The most celebrated of them all is Samuel Okwaraji who also died while representing Nigeria and we still debate his story and situation of his family up till this day.

Between the Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, free thinker etc, man has not taken a position as to where people go when they die, so let, for the sake of this write up make believe that they just sit at some place watching us all, wondering what could have been if they were still on this earth.

How do you punish the dead? They are dead and gone for ever so what could hurt them?

Certainly not the carcass of their bodies that would eventually rot and be eaten by termite because nothing on this earth should bother the dead, right? WRONG!

You can punish the dead by making sure their family suffer for their death. It becomes punishment when the dead man is/ was not guilty of whatever you are punishing his family for.

The dead get punished in Nigeria
Joseph Izu celebrating a goal for Shooting Stars

Being Nigerian for the last forty something years has made me understand how to punish the dead.

Most of the learning was done in the last year as recently relegated side, Shooting Stars have taken the time and effort to teach us all how to perform this disgraceful act.

The sorry case of former Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC defender, Joseph Izu aptly describes how to punish the dead.

How and why he died is not in the purview of this read but why he is being punished by his former employers is what bothers me.

Joseph Izu died as a player of Shooting Stars and had an existing contract with them.

It has been back and forth between Shooting Stars and the late Izu’s family, led by his younger brother, Rueben ever since, while the now relegated club still owes him.

First Shooting Stars’ General Manager, Rasheed Balogun was reported to have told a representative of the Izu family that the sum of five hundred thousand naira was approved but only three hundred thousand naira will be given to them to offset burial expenses.

They however received two hundred and ninety thousand naira for the funeral.

On the day of the funeral, Shooting Stars management team, who were present, handed over the sum of one hundred thousand to Joseph Izu’s widow with a promise to send another one hundred thousand naira but only ninety thousand was received.

For a society that abandons the dead, it is worthy of praise that the club was represented at the funeral service of their late player (who died while holidaying in his home town, far away from Ibadan) and they even ensured they contributed financially to the burial.
Widow of Joseph Izu, Portia and daughter, Stephanie

However, whatever good deed Shooting Stars did before, during and immediately after the funeral of their late player counts for nothing if they do not pay what he was owed and that is the much the family have been asking for.

I remember just before Shooting Stars visited Port Harcourt for the league game against Rivers United, Reuben Izu had used various media outlets to speak out against the club only for the General Manager, Balogun to issue a statement indicting the brother of the late player.

Balogun claimed Reuben was going overboard because he wanted the money owed Joseph paid to him and not to any member of the family. That certainly created some ruckus, especially on social media and if the plan of that statement was to create a diversion, then Shooting Stars succeeded.

Shortly after Balogun issued this statement, the sum of one hundred and forty two thousand naira was sent to the account of Pa Izu, Joseph’s father without stating what the money was meant for.

Was that his salary? A gift? No one knew what that was and a call to Balogun from Pa Izu did not get an answer as the General Manager said he was indisposed and would answer later.

Nothing more was heard from Shooting Stars until recently.

During the 1st year remembrance of his death, more accusations were made by the Izu family in a press conference and once again, a statement was issued from the club citing disagreements within Izu’s family over who collects monies owed him.

I was in that press conference and they spoke in one voice.

In all of these, Shooting Stars still refused to reveal to the family how much Izu was due monthly, how many months salaries he was owed at the time of his death and how many match bonuses he was owed too.

Shortly after the second accusation against the family, Shooting Stars sent the sum of one hundred and forty two thousand naira to the account of Pa Izu and still could not explain what that money was for.

What Shooting Stars should have done

Joseph Izu had a contract with Shooting Stars, details of which I am privy to. I have seen it and I have a copy.

If the management of Shooting Stars were sincere, they would pay the wages of a dead man to his family rather than throw accusations that are uncouth.

Joseph Izu had a wife and daughter at the time of his death. He also had living parents and siblings.

Maybe if Shooting Stars had shown proof of payment of all Izu’s wages to any of these mentioned above that was not eventually accounted for, then they would have had a point to all their accusations.

Joseph Izu was on a salary of N300, 000 (three hundred thousand naira) monthly and was owed for 8 months in the 2015/16 season at the time of this death.

He was also owed a backlog of N1, 560, 00 (One million five hundred and sixty thousand naira) as salaries from the 2014/15 season.

Austin Popo, of the National Association of Professional Footballers, NAPF in a press release pointed out that Joseph Izu is currently owed N3, 810, 000 (three million eight hundred and ten thousand naira for 2015/16 season.

Izu was also owed twenty one match bonuses.

But what I personally do not understand is why Shooting Stars have decided to punish their late defender this way.

I have spoken with Pa Izu, Reuben, his brother, wife and daughter too and the common denominator here is they are not begging for any favours, but what their dead benefactor had already worked for. How difficult is that?

I know the Shooting Stars media team will put up a damning press statement after these 7 minutes go viral and probably accuse me of a lot of things, but the best defense and statement would be one that has proof of payment.

An excerpt from the latest press statement from Shooting Stars read, “Our Attention has been drawn to a letter from one Reuben Izu to the Oyo State Government on behalf of the family, appealing for the payment of salaries and allowances the Club owed the Late Player”
While we acknowledge that the club is still owing the late player, it is very pertinent to put the records straight that, hardly would a month pass, without paying into the account of Pa Izu Snr, the father of Late Izu, as requested by the Family in the last 6 months.”

If hardly a month goes by without paying money into the account of Pa Izu and only twice has it happened in 12 months, then there is something wrong.

There is a lot that is wrong with how we treat our sports people both dead and alive and we must change that attitude now.

There is an Izu Joseph in every one of us. Today, we treat this case as though it doesn’t matter but as surely as the sun will rise and set everyday, we will all need justice at some point in our lives.

It’s Argentina again at the World Cup. Some things never change

it seems like there will be no FIFA World Cup without a Nigeria v Argentina game, or so it seems.

In 6 sojourns to various World Cups we have drawn Argentina 5 times so there is nothing really left to say about that game except a piece advise to Nigerians.

That we beat Argentina in a friendly match does not count as the Argies will be tipped to win the World Cup by 8 out of 10 pundits but Nigeria will not.

You know why? Form is temporary and Class is permanent.

Argentina no be Nigeria mate (as we say in local parlance) as they have won the World Cup twice and been finalists three other times. Nigeria has no such track record.

For Croatia and Iceland, we must understand that the Scandinavians may be the most inexperienced side at the World Cup but what they have done in two years means they should be taken seriously.

As Ufuoma Egbamuno said on his radio show, “Iceland may not be superstars, but the most organised in the group. Croatia are no minnows. If we make second round, that’s success for me.”

The point is, though ours is not the easiest of groups, it could have been worse. We could have been playing Spain and Portugal.

And for NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, his time starts now in his desire to win the World Cup.

Nigeria must get out of that group and see what fate has in store for us. I will enjoy the World Cup and you should too.
