Late Emetoele gets League recognition

Late former coach of Heartland, El-Kanemi and Rangers, Kelechi Emetoele will be honoured by the League when Match Day 26 games kick off across the country on June 28.

Kelechi Emetoele passed on in the early hours of Wednesday, June 21, 2017 after a bout of cancer and the League Management Company, LMC have announced that a mark of respect will be shown to Emetoele.

Players and match officials of clubs will turn out with black arm bands to honour Emetoele.

Emeteole, nicknamed ‘Caterpillar’ in his playing days for various league clubs in the country died in India where he underwent surgery for throat cancer.

Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) expressed grief at the demise of the coach who in addition to managing several league clubs also worked with national teams including the Super Eagles, the Flying Eagles, the Golden Eaglets and the Beach Soccer team, otherwise called the Super Sand Eagles.

The passing on of coach Emeteole is a great loss to the NPFL because he was a coach that has been very prominent in the league coaching teams and raising some of the players who have made this country proud.

He was a true Nigerian who played football and worked with clubs across the states, speaking all three Nigerian major languages,” remarked Dikko.

After retiring from active football with the Owerri based Spartans FC, Emeteole took to coaching and remarkably helped El-Kanemi Warriors return to the NPFL rising all the way from the then Division 3 through to the Division two and to the defunct Nigeria Football League.

A prominent protégée of his at the Borno side is Enyimba International FC's Ikechukwu Ibenegbu who had gone on to represent Nigeria at the senior level and the Beach Soccer championships.

The late Emeteole also had repeat stints at Heartland FC of Owerri and Rangers International.

The LMC has therefore directed that a minute silence be observed across all NPFL venues on Saturday, June 24 and on Wednesday, June 28 for the Match Day 26 fixtures.

According to Dikko, “Emeteole deserves all the honour we can accord him at this time. We commiserate with his family and pray that God will grant them the fortitude to pass through this trying time in their family.”

LBA picks player and Manager for month of May- Eduwo, Preko honoured

Kingsley Eduwo
The League Bloggers Awards, LBA, has picked Lobi Stars forward, Kingsley Eduwo and FC Ifeanyi Ubah coach, Yaw Preko as Player and Manager of the month respectively for May 2017.

Both of them posted superior performances with their clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in the month under review to fend off other contenders in the running for both categories of awards.

It was a strong field of shortlists for the player's award as Eduwo had to square up with last season's top scorer Godwin Obaje of FC Ifeanyiubah, Enugu Rangers winger Osas Okoro and Plateau United left-back Daniel Itodo.

At the end, the list was trimmed to just two players, Eduwo and Obaje. The FC Ifeanyiubah man and his Lobi counterpart were tied on three goals apiece in May.

Eduwo scored in Lobi's 1-0 win at Sunshine Stars and got a double against MFM FC while Obaje netted in FC Ifeanyiubah's 3-0 success at Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and then scored the two goals that saw off four-time champions Kano Pillars in Nnewi.

However, Eduwo topped Obaje with an assist in their three-nil victory over MFM at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi on 28 May when he provided the assist for Sunday Akleche's goal to wrap up a fine day in the office for Lobi.

Abdu Maikaba of Akwa United, Solomon Ogbeide of Lobi Stars and Chukwuma Agbo of Rangers were all in line for the manager's award alongside Preko.

Preko, Maikaba and Ogbeide led their teams to unbeaten streaks in May.

FC Ifeanyiubah under Preko in May were ruthless - defeating 3SC in Ibadan 3-0 and cruising past Kano Pillars 2-0 in Nnewi - to finish the month as the most impressive side with no goal conceded and best superior goal difference.

Lobi's Ogbeide was right on Preko's tail but lost out by virtue of his club's inferior goal difference (of +4) compared to that of FC

Ifeanyiubah (+5) despite winning their two matches as well in Akure against Sunshine Stars and against MFM FC in Makurdi.

The next edition of LBA will be for manager and player for the month of June.

Things are looking up for Crown FC, says Oyekale

Oladuni Oyekale
According to Crown FC coach, Oladuni Oyekale, he is already surpassing the expectations of the side this season.

Oyekale told Naijafootball247.com that his mandate was not to qualify the team to the Premier League this season but just to stabilize it but they are in the title promotion race already.

When I was engaged here the target was just to stabilize the team this season then go for promotion in the second year since I was given a 2 year contract.

But you can see we are one of the front runners now and we will try our best to see if we can get the ticket,” Oyekale said.

Over the midweek in Omoku, Crown lost 1-0 to Go Round FC, a game that was played for two days after rains disrupted proceedings after the first half on Wednesday.

A 73rd minute goal by Chile Azu ensured that Go Round FC beat Crown side on Thursday morning.

In the second half played on Thursday morning, Crown threw everything in their arsenal to escape with a point, fortifying their defence and ensuring their defenders kicked out all balls in their area as far away from danger as possible.

Go Round’s gaffer, Ngozi Elechi threw on barrel chested defender, Chile Azu to play up front in place of Eta Okon.

Azu’s size would be needed up front and his long throws would always be a cause of worry for the visitors.

Crown’s Oladuni Oyekale responded by throwing in Samuel Onukwube for Osinachi Charles but it was the home side that smiled last as Chile Azu got the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute.

In a characteristic long throw from about 30 yards from Azu, goalkeeper, Ibikun Araromi completely mistimed his run and the ball bounced off him to go in to the net to the delight of the Go Round FC faithful.

In the 2nd minute, Nelson Esor almost put the host in the lead but the ball was cleared off the line.

George Vincent also had an early chance for the hosts but a resilient Crown FC defence ensured that the goalkeeper gaffe did not result in a goal.

In the 15th minute, Ebuka Akobundu’s long throw caused panic in the Crown FC area but the ball was scrambled away for a corner.

The closest the visitors got to scoring was in the 33rd minute when Lanigan Gbenga, lurking behind the Go Round FC defenders, caught them off guard and his effort went off the upright as fans of the home side heaved a sigh of relief.

Oladuni Oyekale of Crown FC said his boys played well but the break between halves of the game affected his side.

My boys did their best. I wish it didn't rain yesterday. If it did not rain we may have gotten something out of the game,” Oyekale said.

You see it is not easy to play half and then play the second half the next day. It’s difficult. You know teams have their strategies.. some can go ninety minutes straight without problems but with the break, it affected our team,” Oyekale said.

I commend the boys after a difficult first half yesterday,” Go Round’s Ngozi Elechi said.

They put up a fight today and it paid off. We know Crown, also chasing promotion and we knew it would not be easy.”

He suggested that the rains that stopped the game on Wednesday may have been good for his side since they played better on Thursday morning than on Wednesday afternoon.

Rivers United get cash boost

Felix Obuah
If Rivers United FC beat Club Africain on Sunday in the CAF Confederation Cup they will get one million naira (about $2, 500) and an additional hundred thousand naira (about $250) to the scorer of each goal.

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state, Felix Obuah made this known to the team via a statement released by his media team on Friday evening.

According to Obuah, the players should go all out for victory to make the government and people of Rivers State as well as people of Nigeria proud, adding that the monetary incentives promised the players were made to boost their confidence against their
opponents.

You are the only Nigerian club left in the African club competitions, Rivers people and Nigerians at large deserves nothing but outright win to progress and increase their
chances of winning the trophy,” Obuah said.

Bro. Obuah, who is also the President of Go-Round FC, a Nigerian National League Club, charged football fans to turn out in their thousands and cheer Rivers United to victory, adding that the presence of supporters at the stadium would bring out the best in
the players.

He urged the players to ensure a resounding victory against their opponents as a way to reciprocate the efforts of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who is doing his best to encourage the youths and boosting sports development in the State.

Fractured tibia ends Metu’s season

Chigozirim Metu
ABS winger, Chigozirim Metu will have no more part to play in the League this season as a fractured tibia put paid to his plans.

The cultured winger will be out for at least twelve weeks according to his coach, Henry Makinwa.

Makinwa said on Friday that Metu is out of the season after suffering a fracture on his tibia.

Metu suffered the injury after Kano Pillars' Jamil Jamil's heavy challenge on him during match day 26 NPFL clash in Ilorin Wednesday.

He said the good news is that he will not need surgery but will need POP to assist the injury to heal on time.

"We are not happy with this development and I see this as a setback because the lad is an important part of our plans.

"Injury is part of football and we have to cope with it, but this is one of the periods that we need Chigozirim more.

"The lad is in good condition now and we will do everything to see that he recovers quickly ahead of next season,” Makinwa said.

There are injuries concern for Makinwa ahead of match day 27 clash with MFM FC of Lagos at the Agege Stadium on Sunday.

The likes Ernest Governor, Martin Ossy, Chukwuebuka Anaekwe, Adeoti Muiz are all struggling for fitness ahead of the match.

Five Nigerian stadia that should never host the Super Eagles

$

There is a reason why I love Nigerians and that is simply because we always find a way to get out of every situation.

Somebody or some group of people said a few years ago that after research they found out Nigerians are the happiest people on earth and at some point in my life I began to believe it to be true.

In the last couple of weeks, the social media, radio and television sports shows have been taken over by discussions regarding the suitability of Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium to host games of the Super Eagles.

The narrative actually changed from blaming the goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi to blaming the coach, Rohr for fielding what they called inexperienced players.

Then they moved to Vincent Enyeama returning to the team as without him, Nigeria will never play at the World Cup or AFCON… As if Vincent was not in goal when we missed out on the World Cup party in 2006 and the AFCON party in 2015.

Finally, Nigerians agreed with one voice that Uyo, the town, not just the stadium was jinxed.

Now, I have decided to look beyond Uyo to four other Nigerian stadia that should never ever host the Super Eagles. Not even in a training session.

Special not should be taken to the fact that I am writing this from the Nigerian point of view.

The Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were on course to qualify for their 4th World Cup in Germany. After the glorious debut in 1994 and the disasters of 1998 and 2002, it seemed Nigeria had gotten its acts together and would qualify for the World Cup in 2006.

The first game in the race was played in Abuja on the 5th of June 2004 and Nigeria won 2-0 against Rwanda, both goals scored by Obafemi Martins.

Second home qualifier was against Algeria on July 3, 2004 and this was after a 1-0 loss on the road to an Angolan team inspired by Fabrice Akwa.

Nigeria beat Algeria 1-0, Joseph Yobo, the scorer.

Nigeria went two games on the road, a 3-0 win at Zimbabwe and 1-1 at Gabon.

Next home game was in Port Harcourt on 26 March, 2005 against Gabon and Nigeria won 2-0 with goals from Julius Aghahowa and Nwankwo Kanu and at this point it seemed the Super Eagles were on course to get to the World Cup in Germany.

After another draw on the road to Rwanda, it was down to winning at home to Angola to dislodge our rivals and start preparing for the World Cup when someone at the Nigeria Football Association, NFA decided that the next qualifying game should be played in Kano.

That game ended 1-1 and put paid our ambitions of going to the World Cup even though we later beat Algeria 5-2 in Oran and then Zimbabwe 5-1 in Abuja, we had missed the World Cup.

There were lots of reasons deduced for the result against Angola, but top journalist, Clement Nwankpa still believes the draw happened because after the European Leagues went on break, the players did not report to camp immediately but stayed home for a while. He says a lot of them went partying and clubbing. He actually said he partied with some of them and by the time they reported to camp, their fitness level was low.

Another top journalist, Colin Udoh claimed the players did not show commitment and blamed this on the coach Christian Chukwu who would field players on reputation rather than form.

Udoh posted on a whatsapp group that players would party before games and arrive to camp as late as possible because they already knew they would not play as long as certain players were in camp. The favourites also knew they would start games no matter when they arrived in camp or if they were fit enough.

But because we are Nigerians, these obvious reasons for failure did not matter to us. It had to be Kano. It was jinxed. The weather was too hot. The players were not effective under the difficult Kano conditions. The man who recommended Kano was selfish. Kano killed the Eagles

The Super Eagles should never go to Kano again and they never have since then.

Abuja National Stadium

After the Abuja National Stadium was built and ‘commissioned’ with that friendly match against Brazil, many pundits thought it should be the new home for the Super Eagles.

Games were played on the ground and great wins were recorded until sometime in 2011 when Nigeria failed to qualify for the AFCON with our fate in our hands.

Samson Siasia was coach of the side, taking over from Austin Eguavoen who had started with a loss in Guinea against the Sylli Stars.

But by the last game of the qualifiers in Abuja, all the Eagles needed to do was to win against Guinea and be at the AFCON, but Nigeria drew.

According to Fisayo Dairo, Some old members of the team, most notably goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama were declared unwanted and we went into the match needing victory of any margin.

Quite unfortunately though, the team's handlers and the NFF Technical Committee could not do their Mathematics and with Nigeria leading 2-1 in the closing stages, players were urged on to look for more goals until the Guineans pounced on the break to shatter Nigerian hearts.”

Solace Chukwu described the scenario as a seismic shock.

According to Solace, “the NFF decided to dispense with the services of Lars Lagerback after the 2010 World Cup and picked Austin Eguavoen in acting capacity.

After winning against Madagascar at home, it was a 1-0 loss to Guinea on the road and then Siasia was brought in.

Simply, the Super Eagles needed to win (by any margin) to progress to the tournament, though the manner of progression would be affected by the nature of the victory.
Unaware of this for some reason (the coaching crew would later claim ignorance), having clawed back a deficit to lead 2-1, the team poured forward in search of a third. It was with almost cartoonish glee that the bemused visitors strode forward on the counter in the final minute of the game to draw level and eliminate Nigeria from the running,” Solace Chukwu added.

Now, the change of coaches during qualifiers, the ignorance of the coaches or maybe the technical committee on what the team really needed to qualify or could it be the fact that there was so much uncertainty before the game against Guinea in Conakry where Nigeria had been reportedly banned by FIFA just before the game and it was not clear if the team could play though they continued training.

There was also the fact that first choice keeper, Vincent Enyeama was left out of the game as “punishment” for earlier spat with the coaches and some people felt Dele Aiyenugba cost us the game.

There were lots of factors involved in Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the AFCON in 2012 but why go into details when you can just blame it on the Abuja National Stadium or better still, the people of Abuja.

The Eagles had to leave Abuja and the reasons were simple- The fans did not turn out in their numbers and even when they did were too passive to motivate the national team players.

Abuja should never host the Eagles again.

Little wonder, when the team resumed for the next set of qualifying games for the AFCON of 2013, the U. J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar was the new home and not the Abuja National Stadium.

The U. J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar

The Super Eagles had found home in Calabar since Stephen Keshi became coach of the team and had fought lots of great battles there, won lots too.

Calabar had become a stomping ground for the team and one of the big advantages of playing in Calabar as many emphasised was that the fans would not just turn out in their numbers, but will remain patient until a goal was scored.

They were not as passive as the Abuja fans or as aggressive as the Lagos fans.

Finally, the Eagles had found home and it was in Calabar.

It was in Calabar that the Super Eagles qualified for the AFCON in 2013 which they went on to win and it was in Calabar that the Eagles qualified for the World Cup in Brazil.

Now the team was on the march again and needed to qualify for the AFCON in 2015 but it was disaster in the first game as Nigeria lost 2-3 to Congo.

The Eagles were quickly shipped to Abuja for their next home game, a 3-1 win against Sudan but for the final qualifier, a home tie against South Africa, it had to be Uyo that was angling to be the new home of the Eagles, with Calabar now an evil ground.

However, the Eagles drew that game against South Africa when all they needed to do was win by any margin and qualify for the AFCON and of course, Nigerians blamed the cursed Calabar Stadium.

There were lots of reasons for that poor performance and Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the AFCON.

Football writer, Fisayo Dairo told Naijafootball247.com that there was a power tussle in the Nigeria Football Federation between Honorable Chris Giwa and Amaju Pinnick.

Dairo adds that on the day of the game against Congo, Nigerians watched in dismay as the president of one of the factions was prevented from performing pre-match formalities.

A bitter Solace Chukwu reacted thus, Failure to qualify in 2015 was also sealed confirmed with a 2-2 draw on home turf, and yet again the damage was done early on. The setting was eerily similar: once more, following a World Cup, there was no clear idea on what to do about the coaching situation. It is thoroughly fitting that a nation that does not regard history is tripped up repeatedly by its inability to learn from it.
As the football authorities squabbled over leadership of the Glass House, our beloved national team lost 3-2 in Calabar to the might of Congo, co-starred in a drab goalless affair in Johannesburg, and then contrived to lose away in Sudan. With 18 points at stake, garnering one from the opening nine was a complete disaster from which redemption proved impossible.”

Could the power tussle have affected the team? What of the fact that the NFF technical committee was always at daggers drawn with the coach, Stephen Keshi over team selection?

But again, we are Nigerians so we cannot attribute our failure to qualify for the AFCON to anything that makes sense. It had to be the Stadium in Calabar that jinxed us.

We should never go back to Calabar to play a match and we haven’t since that loss to Congo. And maybe we will never.

Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna

After the late Stephen Keshi was finally sacked by the NFF, the president, Amaju Pinnick soon introduced Sunday Oliseh as the new gaffer of the team, describing him as the African Pep Guardiola.

But not long after, things began to go awry within the ranks.

First, in a game played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, John Mikel Obi was kept on the bench all of ninety minutes while Sunshine Stars’ Paul Onobi bossed the midfield and the rumours made the rounds that Oliseh wanted to slowly do away with the older/ senior players in the team.

In Belgium during a training camp he reportedly engaged captain of the side, Vincent Enyeama in fisticuffs that got really ugly and Enyeama quit the team soon after.

Then Mikel Obi allegedly turned down the captainship position of the team.

Something was not right and we knew it but with two important qualifiers left to play, Oliseh resigned and in Kaduna, with Samson Siasia in caretaker role, Nigeria could only draw 1-1 against Egypt then lose the return leg 1-0.

Did the coaching crises and changes affect performance? Did the infighting in the team between coach and players change anything? Maybe they did, but Nigerians were more concerned with the venue of the game and Kaduna took the fall.

It suddenly became jinxed, unsafe and overcrowded so the Eagles had to move yet again.

The Ahmadu Bello Stadium should never host the Super Eagles again and maybe it never will.

Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo

With Stadia in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna and Calabar proving that they had sinister forces around them that had affected national team performances, the venue changed again to Uyo.

In spite of the fact that Uyo hosted the team for the ill-fated 2-2 game against South Africa that sealed our inability to go to the AFCON in 2015, it was agreed that the damage had been done earlier and Uyo had to be given another chance.

Uyo had turned out home to the Eagles once again. This time, under Gernot Rohr.

In a "meaningless" game against Tanzania, we won 1-0 and then we won against Algeria, the top ranked team in Africa, scoring as much as three goals.

Surely, the Eagles were back and Uyo had to be the new spiritual home of the team.

Suddenly, Gernot Rohr and his handlers felt as though he was no longer mortal and would succeed, no matter what he did.

He had some injury concerns like Victor Moses, Leon Balogun, Mikel Obi and Carl Ikeme affecting the core of his team that gave him an unbeaten run in his first few games.

He went on to leave out the likes of Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye, while John Ogu and Kenneth Omeruo did not get to play against South Africa.

Other players who were in form around the time of the game like Jamiu Alimi of Kano Pillars and Stephen Odey of MFM FC were not even considered.

That game had been over analysed so it makes no sense trying to do that anymore, but after the 2-0 home loss to Bafana Bafana, the above mentioned factors plus the fact that the Nigeria Football Federation had to borrow match balls from their opponents were not considered when Uyo suddenly became an evil place to play.

According to current reports, the Uyo stadium is jinxed because the original owners of the land the stadium was built on placed a hex on the Eagles since they were not compensated by the State Government.

Reports also said the Meridien Hotel, where both the Eagles and Bafana stayed is too far from the stadium (as if it was closer before the game).

They also said lots of prostitutes flood the hotel there by distracting the players… Hmmm.

In any case, Uyo should no longer host the Eagles. We will wait and see on this one.

Who then can host?

After successfully knocking off Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Calabar and Uyo, it seems Nigeria has just one stadium left that can host the Eagles when you consider the grass pitches in the country and their current state.

At least the Eagles have never lost on that ground and qualified for one World Cup playing there.

But how soon will it take for Port Harcourt to become a cursed ground?

We wait and see.

Rivers Angels captain, Charity John is upbeat her side will gather the three points in Wednesday’s League match against Ibom Angels.

The game at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium will see Angels gaffer, Edwin Okon lead his girls against face his former assistant coach, Ogbonda Whyte who joined Ibom Angels after seven years with him.

According to John, Whyte knows the team too well but she assured fans that they will approach Wednesday’s game with different tactics.

He knows us very well as he is our former coach,” Charity said.

“Whyte knows what we’re capable of doing and I know he will be telling his girls how to mark us.

But we will play with a different formation, one he hasn’t seen us play with before,” the skipper added.

In the reverse fixture, Ibom Angels forward, Charity Reuben had to score from the spot in added time to force the league champions to a 1-1 draw.

Speaking further, John said she was confident that her side will get all maximum points in this midweek fixture.

We were in front when we went away to them and they had to come from behind to earn a draw.

Come Wednesday we are getting nothing short of victory. I believe we can beat them here in Port-Harcourt," she added.

John equally urged all football fans in Port Harcourt to come out in their numbers to cheer the team to victory.

The turnout last week was encouraging and I believe they would do better this Wednesday.

We’ve been making the state proud, so I’m assuring them that we won’t relent. They should come out in their numbers to throw their support behind us against Ibom Angels,” she concluded.

Rivers Angels top group A with 15 points while Ibom Angels are 5th on 8 points.

Asiegbu, Newman, Odey vie for Wonder Goal 6 (videos included)

Stephen Odey
Akwa United striker Musa Newman, Shedrack Asiegbu of Abia Warriors and the NPFL leading scorer and MFM FC striker Stephen Odey have emerged as the men in the running for the VAT Wonder Goal 6.

The three goals were among 18 scored on Matchday 25.

Newman's goal was Akwa United's second in a 2-0 win over Katsina United while Asiegbu's strike was the first of his brace in a tight contest with league leaders Plateau United which his club Abia Warriors triumphed 2-1.

The goal scored by Odey for MFM against Kano Pillars temporarily put the game at 1-1 and later represented scant consolation as Pillars ran out 3-1 winners.

The build-up to Asiegbu's goal began with a throw-in on the right channel of Abia Warriors' attack. Yakub Hammed threw the ball to Sunday Adetunji who shielded it nicely at the edge of Plateau United's box before cushioning it to Uche Ihuarulam whose intended cross took a deflection off the back of Plateau United's Jimmy Ambrose.

The ball then fell kindly to Asiegbu who controlled with his chest towards his left foot and struck sweetly into the top corner beyond Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye for the first of his two goals on the matchday under review.

Katsina United's sloppy defending was a reason that led to Newman's goal for Akwa United who were at the time leading by a goal at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. Akwa United attacked from the left, Katsina United could not clear their lines and that allowed in a cross into the box which an unmarked Newman directed his headed attempt downward into the net past goalkeeper Okoli Okoli.

Stephen Odey's goal

For the goal scored by Odey, it was a typical MFM style of playing from the back with short passes. Sikiru Olatunbosun and playmaker Chukwuka Onuwa were involved in a brilliant interchange of passes before the former slipped Odey through on goal. The NPFL leading scorer used his pace to good effect, leaving the Kano Pillars' defence in his wake. He then calmly picked his spot to beat David Obiazo in goal.

Voting for the VAT Wonder Goal 6 commences on the NPFL website and Twitter account.and will end at midnight of Thursday, July 6, 2017.

Shedrack Asiegbu's goal

The VAT Wonder Goal Award attracts a cash prize of N150, 000 for the winner with half of the money donated to a Charity to be nominated by the player within the state where the club is located. It is supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) to promote club-community relationship and also create awareness for tax education.

The Stanley Eguma debacle: what should Rivers United do with him?

$
0
0
By Ufuoma Egbamuno

At the end of Sunday’s unfortunate result against Club Africain in the CAF Confederation Cup, a group of fans started a chant at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium: “Eguma must go, Eguma must go,” they chorused in unison.

Now while the chants didn’t last that long, for once, it showed the signs of frustrations that had been brewing for embattled Rivers United manager, Stanley Eguma.

Let’s be honest, as manager of the renamed Rivers United, Eguma has not convinced a lot of fans in the last 18 months. So much so, he got an ultimatum in the middle of last season.

Fortunately, that proved to be the turning point of his season.

An away win in Warri against Warri Wolves and a hugely impressive home record proved valuable for United as they went on to finish in second place just behind eventual winners, Rangers International.

On face value, finishing second, 4 points behind the league champions, when you were expected to battle for relegation, was worth celebrating. It was indeed a good achievement.

But, for political reasons, the celebration went a step over the top.

How old is Rivers United, really?

The Rivers State Sports Ministry as well as the media department of the club consistently have tried to show the world that Rivers United is a new club.

Former commissioner of sports (there’s no substantive commissioner as at the time of writing this) Boma Iyaye did explain last year at a press conference that defunct state owned clubs Dolphins and Sharks merged to form Rivers United.

However, the laws that govern league football in Nigeria as stated by the League Management Company (LMC) show that Rivers United is a club that changed its name from Dolphins.

A statement on the LMC website published February 19th, 2016 reads thus: “Dolphins FC has been granted approval to change their name to Rivers United FC by the League Management Company (LMC) with a proviso that they comply with relevant rules dealing with specific sections of the Framework and Rules for change of name.

The approval was granted pursuant to an application for change of name endorsed by the Rivers State Government, owners of the club through the office of the Commissioner for Sports.”

If this isn’t clear enough, I wonder what will.

So, while finishing second when that wasn’t expected is a good achievement worth celebrating, the constant reminder by coach Stanley Eguma, the media department of the club as well as the sports commissioner that Rivers United is a new club who are playing on the continent for the very first time is nothing short of misinformation.

While, that can pass when for political reasons you want to blow the trumpet of the present administration (who have indeed invested enormous resources on the team), it shouldn’t be used to mask the shortcomings of the club on the continent because it is SIMPLY NOT TRUE.

Rivers United are former League champions, Federation Cup winners, CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup campaigners who should be aiming to be like their rivals on the continent.

And this brings me back to the Eguma question. For a manager who has won a league title, a cup and was an assistant manager when Enyimba won the CAF Champions League, a lot is expected of him.

This season, Rivers United have signed some of the best players in the land; have had first class preseason training that saw the team going to Spain; and have not had major issues with salaries or bonuses.

So, it is only natural that a lot is expected of them.

Or, should we accept that they are a new club who have done tremendously to remain the only Nigerian club on the continent?
Languishing in 16thplace on the league table –albeit with 2 outstanding games against Akwa United and Kano Pillars- as well as facing exit in the CAF Confederation Cup isn’t good enough. For me, the buck stops at the manager’s table.

What is wrong with Stanley Eguma?

Eguma’s tactics, at least this season, has left a lot to be desired. Like most NPFL clubs, Rivers United have been good at home but horrible on the road. I have only been privileged to watch all 4 games in the group stages of the Confederations Cup – the game against Club Africain of Tunisia and KCCA of Uganda have one similarity: reactionary football.

Only when the team went behind did you see some level of seriousness. Add the FUS Rabat home game where they only won courtesy of an offside goal, and you wouldn’t have been shocked about last Sunday’s defeat.

I had the chance to speak to KCCA manager Mike Mutebi when they visited Port Harcourt a fortnight ago. He told me point blank that his philosophy is to play attacking football regardless of the venue.

Despite conceding a first minute goal against Rivers United, KCCA stuck to their guns and could have probably gotten a point from the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.

Juxtapose that philosophy with Kennedy Boboye’s league leaders presently or Imama Amapakabo’s Rangers International last season, you will understand why Rangers won the title; Boboye is well on his way to replicate that; and Stanley Eguma’s team have  been poor this season.

You can blame referees, poor pitches, security concerns all you want for the seeming tendency for NPFL teams to win at home most times, you won’t be wrong.

But, make no mistake, the greatest problem stopping teams from getting results outside their home ground is the mentality passed on from managers: setting up not to lose instead of trying to win games. Eguma is no exception!

Rivers United needs its long-standing manager to change from his sometimes reactionary style of play or better still, get a new manager with fresh ideas and a more daring approach if they are to move to the next level.
But guess what, don’t bet on it to happen anytime soon!

Someone close to the club confided in me that former Rangers manager, Imama Amapakabo has been a long term target to replace Eguma. But making that decision is a difficult one. One that may have far reaching consequences than just football according to my source.

First, Imama is from the Okrika region as the former commissioner Iyaye (who would most likely return when the governor constitutes a new cabinet) while Eguma is Ikwerre. It’s quite easy for Iyaye to be accused of nepotism if that decision is made.

Secondly, Eguma is a relative of the governor. With the way we do things in Nigeria, you have to have enough cogent reasons to sack someone that close to the governor. For now, there doesn’t seem to be any.

So, some fans of Rivers United can chant all they want about wanting Eguma out of the team. Truth of the matter is that a camel would most likely pass through the eye of needle before Eguma is shown the exit.

Asiegbu Polls highest in VAT Wonder Goal 6 Voting

Abia Warriors’ Shedrack Asiegbu has been announced winner of the VAT Wonder Goal Award in a tight race decided online.

He fought off stiff challenges from League’s top scorer, Stephen Odey and Musa Newman of Akwa United to cart home the award.

Goals scored by the three were shortlisted out of the total 18 goals of the Match Day and at the end of voting, 731 fans voted on the website while another 361 voted on the twitter platform.

Asiegbu’s goal was the favourite for 335 voters on the website and was followed by Newman who polled 209 with Odey getting the nod from 187. However, of the twitter voters, Odey ran far ahead with 184 of the 361 while Asiegbu had 90 and Newman picked 87 of the total votes.

Asiegbu thus polled a cumulative 425 votes to edge Odey on 371 with Newman receiving the least combined votes of 296.

The Abia Warriors forward had netted twice in the fixture against league leaders, Plateau United at the Umuahia Township Stadium but it was the first of his two goals that caught attention. It was a perfect ending to a move that began with a throw-in on the right channel of Abia Warriors' attack when Yakub Hammed threw the ball to Sunday Adetunji who shielded it nicely at the edge of Plateau United's box before cushioning it to Uche Ihuarulam whose intended cross took a deflection off the back of Plateau United's Jimmy Ambrose.

The ball then fell kindly to Asiegbu who controlled with his chest towards his left foot and struck sweetly into the top corner beyond Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye for the first of his two goals on the day.

Asiegbu becomes the 6th Wonder Goal winner joining the rest that includes Ayo Saka (Rivers United), Ubong Friday (Akwa United), Salefu Ochowechi (Remo Stars), Pascal Seka (FC IfeanyiUbah) and Ahmed Usman of Wikki Tourists.

The award carries a reward of N150,000 half of which will be donated to a charity to be nominated by the player from within the state where the club is based. The VAT Wonder Goal is an initiative of the League Management Company (LMC) and supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) as a social investment to drive tax education and deepen clubs and community engagement.

Ideye knocks the ball around with his Teda team mates
China Acheru

Super Eagles and Tianjin Teda striker, Brown Ideye is not losing sleep over the country’s failure to beat South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Uyo last month.

Ideye told Naijafootball247.com that Nigeria can still qualify for both tournaments if the Federation and coaches do the rights things.

I understand the fear of every one now, but it is still possible that we can qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations,” Ideye said.

In football everything is possible so we can qualify though it seems doubtful with the results and what happened during the game against South Africa.

We have five games left to play so we must begin to do the right things.”

Brown Ideye told Naijafootball247.com that the fans need to know all hope is not lost for Nigeria to be at the AFCON in 2019 and the World Cup next year.

Qualification is possible but we must do the right things. We must work as a team and put heads together to qualify for the World Cup and Nations Cup, but it cannot be done with out carrying all the players and staff along.”

What he brings in

As evidenced by his AFCON 2013 partnership with Emmanuel Emenike, his assist for Iheanacho’s goal against Zambia in 2016 and many others, Ideye describes himself as an unselfish player who works for the team and not himself.

I always put my teams first and not myself and this is about the Super Eagles and what ever club I play for.

In football, team work is more important than personal glory and someone has to make the sacrifices,” Ideye continued.

He suggested that these are the qualities he brings to the Super Eagles whenever he is called up.

If everyone wants to score then we will have problems with the team. One person must assist for another. You cannot pass to your self to score. I contribute a lot to teams, especially the Super Eagles and I never put myself before the team.”

Since joining Tianjin Teda from Olympiakos, he seems to have settled in, unlike when he moved from Dinamo Kiev to West Bromwich Albion.

Four goals from eleven games and it is a much better start than in England with West Bromwich Albion.

Well, the difference is that I was playing the League in Greece and moved over here from Olympiakos so I had no issues with fitness, but in England I joined from the off season and missed the pre-season due to visa issues and all.

Here I had no issues with physical fitness but just had to adapt to the tactics of the coach.”

Communications, though has been tough “though all foreign players have translators. On match day, I and Mikel Obi communicate through pidgin English to give us the edge over others,” he said.

Relationship with Mikel Obi
John Mikel Obi

Mikel Obi first joined Teda before Ideye who describes his Super Eagles captain as a good friend and leader.

It is very good to have a player like Mikel in your team and I must say it is a blessing.

He has really been a brother, friend and colleague and helped me a lot even before I came to the team. The relationship is really good.”

Family ties

The distance from Tianjin to Greece where his family resides is probably killing him as he explains that since he moved outside Nigeria to play professional football, he has not been away from his family so long.

It has been tough. I just touched base with them during the last international break and took time off from my club to have quality time with my family.

Since my career in Europe started, I have not been away from them this long.”

Love for Zlatan Ibrahimovic

When people ask who my role model is in football, they are surprised to hear me say, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and they begin to wonder if we play similar styles, but I can say that I have always tried to learn from watching him.

Most of the things Zlatan does with his head and ball at his feet, I try to do too,” Ideye explained to Naijafootball247.com.

Ideye says he plans to win honours with Tianjin Teda and return to the Super Eagles to help the team qualify for the AFCON and World Cup like he and his colleagues did in 2013 and 2014.

Rivers Angels coach, Regina Akaraonye says she is expecting a big battle from hosts, FC Robo as the Women Football League continues in Lagos on Wednesday.

Following dropped points in last week’s action on home soil against Ibom Angels, champions, Rivers Angels are now condemned to get a decent result against FC Robo Queens at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium in Lagos.

The hosts lost 2-1 to Bayelsa Queens in Nembe over the weekend, making Akaraonye to envisage a tough game.

Akaraonye, however, believes her girls will put up a good fight during the game.

I can’t use our last result to judge the girls and I believe they know what is at stake on Wednesday after dropping those points last week,” Akaraonye told the Rivers Angels Media.

I also believe they will put up a good fight to get the point they lost at home,” she added.

The former Rivers Angels skipper also used the opportunity to dismiss the fact that the team was under the pressure to retain the NWFL title.

Akaraonye is optimistic the team is still poised on making the top spot on the log but however insists they weren’t doing that under any pressure.

We are not under any pressure. In the game of football you either win or lose,” Akaraonye said.

For the fact that we drew at home doesn’t mean we don’t know where we are headed.

Our target is to top our group and I know my girls will do it,” she concluded.

The reverse fixture ended 3-0 in Port Harcourt in favour of Rivers Angels.

Enyimba vs Tornadoes: When legality becomes untenable

$

By Ufuoma Egbamuno

I haven’t been this angry about issues in Nigeria football in a long time. To be honest, if you follow Nigerian football religiously, nothing would shock you.

After all, we are in a country where thousands of dollars got missing from the office of the Nigeria Football Federation and years after, we still do not know who took the cash.

But, when at a few minutes past 4pm on Thursday evening, I saw a post on a WhatsApp group that Enyimba Football Club had been exonerated by the League Management Company (LMC) after the club fielded an ineligible player, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, in a game against Niger Tornadoes, my rage knew no bounds.

First, I didn’t believe it so I went to the website of the LMC to read the statement to be certain. Well, as I checked the website, there it was staring me in the face:
“…suspension notices are sent to both clubs involved in any match in question in order for disputes over eligibility of players to be addressed prior to the match. Note that where a protest is made against the eligibility of a player prior to a match and the other team insists on fielding such player, upon confirmation that the player was ineligible, it would likely be established that the team intentionally featured such a player as envisaged under Rule C5”, read the LMC decision signed by Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer.

To break this down, Enyimba fielded an ineligible player; Tornadoes protested after losing; LMC investigates; Enyimba say they didn’t get notice and so exploit a clause in rule which says teams can only be punished if they field ineligible player INTENTIONALLY; Tornadoes lose protest; Enyimba gets reprieve; and we all live happily ever after.

Well, not so fast!

LMC duly acknowledged in the statement that notices were sent to both clubs.
Tornadoes got theirs. Enyimba didn’t.

Was the notice sent by email?
Or was it hard copy?
How did the LMC prove that Enyimba didn’t get theirs?

What if Tornadoes say they only got the notice after the game and so could not have had the knowledge to put their protest prior to the game?

How come the match commissioner on duty didn’t have a record of suspended players since it was one of the issues usually discussed at pre-match meetings?
More so, don’t clubs have secretaries whose duty it is to keep records?

Between 4 pm and 7pm that Thursday, I couldn’t control my anger. It was evident as I tried to ask these questions above on my radio show.

I couldn’t understand how a club can categorically claim not to know their player was ineligible for a game and do so without any form of remorse whatsoever.
Understandably, the wordings of the LMC rule means teams can exploit it. Here’s what the rule says:

“If it is established that, a team intentionally featured a player who had earlier received five (5) yellow cards or red card before the match in question, the affected team will lose 3 points 3 goals to its opponent.”

The key word there is INTENTIONAL!

Enyimba, by claiming not to have received the notification from the LMC, argued that it didn’t know the player in question was on 5 yellows and so fielded the player in error.

How convenient!

Real Madrid were a couple of years ago thrown out of the Copa del Rey for fielding Denis Cheryshev. Their two appeals based on the fact they didn’t know their player was banned (INTENTIONAL) was thrown out by not only by the Spanish Football Federation, but by the Spanish Sports Tribunal.

If that is so far away, Cape Verde defender Fernando Verela was red carded and given a 4 match ban for unsporting behavior. His country fielded him in a shock 2:0 win over Tunisia in a World Cup qualifier when he still had one more suspension. Their plea that they didn’t know (INTENTIONAL again) fell on deaf ears as FIFA’s hammer came down. Tunisia - whose coach Nabil Maaloul had resigned prior to this decision because he felt he had already disappointed his nation – progressed to the final stage of the African qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.

However, these two cases don’t have their rule books written with the word INTENTION ingrained in it I suppose.

It meant the Spanish Federation and FIFA could take the correct decision to throw out the respective teams from the competition.

And just when I thought I had calmed down, something triggered it again the next morning.

As I returned from the salon on Friday morning, I caught a re-run of Naija Made – The Supersport show that deals with everything Nigeria football.

Thankfully, almost immediately the presenter Chisom Mbonu brought up the Enyimba/Tornadoes issue.

I sat and watched as all 3 analysts – top broadcasters Ralph Chidozie George; Aikhoje Ojeikere and football administrator Dominic Iorfa – all try to put almost all the blame on Tornadoes for not protesting prior to the match as the LMC rules dictate.

As shown above, going by the LMC rules, those arguments count.

But I expected more.

To my greatest shock, not one sentence was uttered to reprimand Enyimba’s negligence.

Not one sentence to criticize the lack of professionalism exhibited by Enyimba and by extension all clubs in the league.

That was when it dawned on me why I was so livid the previous day.

The fact that all three analysts and by extension most of us were more concerned with the legality or not of Tornadoes’ protest and less concerned about the shocking lack of professionalism by a 7 time Nigerian champion and 2 time African King is indeed the height of absurdity.

The last time I checked, ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law.

I can accept the LMC verdict to an extent if the league regulator made the mistake of not sending notice to both clubs. Then we can majorly blame the league regulator since we’ve come to accept the lack of professionalism from our clubs as the norm.

But, it did!

Only that, Enyimba didn’t get theirs. Allegedly, the mail the LMC sent went into the junk folder of Enyimba.

Like I asked earlier, how did the LMC prove this?

Trust me; even my 4 year old nephew won’t buy that line of reasoning or excuse.
But alas, the LMC did.

In an ideal world, if the LMC wanted to avoid awarding boardroom points for this misdemeanor, the least they could have done was to strip Enyimba of the points they got and award to no one or better still, call for a replay.

I know the rule as written now, accepts the decision it took; but common sense should allow that a culprit faces sanction right?

Or we accept that the LMC suspending Ibenegbu for Enyimba’s next game against FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Tornadoes accepting its decision is good enough punishment?

See, when we move two steps forward and one step back, as demonstrated by this legal but ridiculous LMC decision, you understand why our teams cannot be placed in the same wavelength as their North and South African colleagues.

You also understand how Club Africain of Tunisia can sign a sponsorship deal worth a reported $35 million but a reigning league champion in Nigeria would celebrate winning a trophy after 32 years with a truck so dirty, you could literally puke just looking at it.

Bottom line, this Enyimba/Tornadoes tussle should have served an opportunity to enforce discipline amongst clubs.
However, just like El Kanemi Warriors escaped points’ deduction some seasons ago; just like clubs get a slap on the wrist despite continuous violence in some venues; the LMC has gone the easy route: hide under legality and their rule framework and exonerate a culprit.

A REAL SHAME!

How a Nigerian club scored 79 goals in a League match

$

China Acheru

This is not a joke but it is now four years and one week to the day a record was broken in Nigerian and maybe world football as seventy nine goals were scored in a single league game.

In fact one hundred and forty six goals were scored across two games.

I remember that encounter so well as I had just started working in a new radio station and that story broke just in the nick of time.

When I first heard that so many goals were scored in two league games some questions ran through my mind and I was asking how you can score that many goals in 90 minutes?

Wasn’t the ball passed? Didn’t you at least hold on to the ball before your opponents won it and scored? What really happened? So I began my investigations.

Now, this, below was the report of the proceeding on the day, as reported by www.kickoffnigeria.com

Two matches in Nigeria’s Amateur league game witnessed a combined, mind-boggling total of 146 goals.

Police Machine FC from Yola obliterated Bubayero FC from Gombe by 67-0.

Not to be outdone, Plateau United Feeders from Jos made it 79-0 against Akurba FC from Nasarawa.

The four teams were involved in one of eight groups in the Nigerian Amateur Division 4 play-offs, the sixth tier of domestic football in the country.

Going into the last round of games at the Bauchi centre, Police Machine and Plateau United Feeders were level on points, and goal difference was expected to determine progress.

NFF head of Competitions Mohammed Sanusi expressed outrage at the results.

“This is a disgrace. We have confirmed the results from the centre and it is totally unacceptable,” he tells KickOffNigeria.com. “The amateur league board will take a decision on it as soon as possible.”

In the interim, Tanko Maiyaki, the coordinator for the Bauchi centre, has announced the immediate cancellation of all results from the centre.

Amateur league board Secretary Emmanuel Adesanya added that the match officials had also been suspended pending further disciplinary action.

“The match officials have been suspended. The good news is that none of these teams are part of our league as yet. At the moment, they are simply representatives of their states, and only the group winners would have qualified to join the Nationwide Amateur League.

“We cannot allow such fraudulent teams to be part of our league. But the board will take a final decision.”

But what really happened on the day?

There were four teams in one of eight groups in the Nigeria Amatuer League Division 4 play-offs, which was the 6th tier of domestic football in the country.

The teams, Police Machine FC of Yola, Bubayero FC from Gombe, Plateau United Feeders and Akurba FC of Nasarawa had played two rounds of games.

By the final day, Police Machine and Plateau United Feeders had six points each and both needed to win their final game to finish leaders on points and goals difference to qualify for the next division.

Now, this was where the drama began.

The opponents of Police Machine, Bubayero FC and the opponents of Plateau United, Akurba FC did not stand a chance and were compromised by their opponents to throw the games.

The Nigeria Football Federation did their best to avoid a match fixing situation by having both games played simultaneously, one at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium and the other at the games village, but each team had an agent at the other venue to brief his team on what was going on so they know the number of goals they had to score.

Bauchi based sports journalist, Joshua Tekidek watched one of the games and he told NaijaFootball247.com that it was a complete mess.

“At the end of the first half, Plateau United led 7-0 while Police Machine led 6-0,” Tekidek told NaijaFootball247.com.

So it had to be mind blowing that Plateau United scored 72 goals in a 45 minute 2ndhalf while Police Machine got 61 goals in the second half so how did that happen?

“Both of them needed to win and score more than the other for a better goals difference so when at half time, their agents in each ground sent messages on the score lines, they each needed to score more.

“They started scoring goals. Sometimes the defenders would just pass the ball back to his goalkeeper, he opens his legs and it will be a goal. It was very funny,” Tekidek said.

“The match coordinator, Maiyaki was so angry that he got the police to arrest players of both teams but they all ran away.”

The Nigeria Football Federation thereafter banned players and officials of all for teams for  ten years as well as the clubs,  but my honest thought was that they should have sanctioned the referees because there was just no way you could score 72 goals in 45 minutes without help from the referee to extend the half.

I also thought the players and officials of both teams should have been arrested including the fans that stayed for ninety minutes to watch that mess.

Two years after that incident, the coach of the Plateau United Feeders team, Victor Wickadason was appointed head coach of Plateau United FC but after outcry from the country’s meda citing that he had previously been banned for life, his club was prompted to action and they terminated his appointment.

However, he had served as assistant coach of Plateau United unnoticed for at least a year before then.

Below is the list of the players and officials who brought Nigerian football to shame in July 2013.

Open Letter to the FCT Minister, as cows take over football field in Abuja

By Aderonke Bello

Dear Alhaji Mohammed Bello,

I am writing you this letter with utter disgust and disappointment in the way your administration is handling the issues of herdsman in the capital city of Nigeria especially with recent residency of cows at the Area 10 old parade ground.

As a football writer and aficionado, I think this is the worst treatment to ever be meted on the already deteriorating state of football in the FCT – capital city of Nigeria.

The Area 10 old parade ground is the official local football field of the FCT, lovely and beautiful; a venue that has produced football and basketball stars. Sir, the place has now become a tussle between cows and humans, with cows dragging it with players.

Ronke Bello
It is so sad to learn that your administration ordered the AEPB staff to keep cows on the field where humans play football, basketball and more importantly, para-soccer stars who have no other such field suitable for them to play football – how you want the para-soccer athletes to manage when cows are treading over them is beyond me and other sports enthusiast.

The cows as I write this letter enjoy more security than residents as we can see security personnel protecting the arrested cows. Supreme FC and FC City Strikers can no longer use the official football field in peace of mind; this will undoubtedly affect their overall performance. Not to mention the destruction that will be caused to grasses, and conversely the field of play as they feed and trample on them.

It is a shame to the FCT administration and the entire nation that a football field is now a base for cows to stay. Please find the attached picture, as I write this letter, players can no longer play football with ease. The place smell of cow dung, some angry cows can be seen sometime running and chasing people around the field.

My request is this, please Sir, relocate the cows, remove them from the football field, there are numerous land areas in the FCT that can easily fit the cows. I hope you can look into this shameful issue promptly.

Thank you.

Aderonke Bello

The Rivers United drama troupe continue to perform

Down and out? Sunday Rotimi urges Emeka Ogbuh to get up
The drama as regards who controls the stakes at Port Harcourt based Rivers United is playing out in full voice especially in the absence of a substantive sports commissioner in the state.

The visible infighting within the ranks may finally swallow the team as developments in the last two days suggest

It has been a comedy of errors at the club ever since the season began with different camps calling shots or at least believing they call the shots at the club as each tried to undo the other.

As this infighting continued, the performance of the team depreciated on the pitch and results stopped coming in the way fans and sponsors wanted it.

Ultimatum according to Kpalikwu

On Friday, two days after their home loss to Sunshine Stars, General Manager of the club, Okey Kpalikwu  announced that a three match ultimatum had been issued to the coaches of the side to perform or face sanctions but neither the media officer of the club, Sammy Wejinya nor the head coach, Stanley Eguma acknowledged such a scenario occurred.

According to Kpalikwu on Friday, “The team is not doing well but we cannot get a new coach at this time in season because it will be counterproductive with just a few matches to go,” Kpalikwu said.

“So there is an ultimatum to perform in the nest three matches. He has to win the three matches or face sanctions and that was one of the decisions taken by the sports ministry who are the supervisors of the club.”

“In football you consider that when you win you do not win all the time but when you look at the amount of resources put in the team, there is a need to make the fans happy. You cannot lose all the time. There is no improvement in terms of results and there are calls to remove the coach but we cannot do that now.”

No ultimatum, according to Eguma

Eguma denies knowledge of an ultimatum
However, with no official statement coming from the club’s media office, head coach of the side, Stanley Eguma went on record to deny that there was ever a three match ultimatum issued to him or his coaching crew.

“No comments. I don’t have any comment on that because I have not heard anything about that (the 3-match ultimatum),” Eguma told www.busybuddiesng.com.

But Permanent Secretary drops the hammer

Ever since the dissolution of the Rivers State Executive Committee by the governor, Nyesom Wike, the Permanent Secretaries were charged to act as commissioners at their respective ministries.

The acting commissioner for sports is Michael Nnodi , who is the Permanent Secretary and he told Carl Orakwue on Friday that the team had more issues than just poor performances on the pitch.

He cited infighting and favoritism as some of the reasons why the club was not doing well this season.
“We have noticed that the performance of the team has been dwindling. We started
with the Champions League and lost out to the Confederation Cup, lost out and are not playing in the Premier League and the performance is still low.

“We met with the management, technical crew and supporters club on Thursday and with the players today (Friday) and everybody spoke while we took some decisions.

“We have resolved that every player should move to the camp; those who are in hotels and in their homes should move to the camp where everybody will stay together, focus and ensure that victory comes our way.

“We have also resolved that the technical crew must select players based on performance and not favouritism because many players expressed that opinion that they have not been allowed to play because of favouritism.

“We have instructed the technical crew to sit up. We have given them an ultimatum to sit up and win their next three matches or face serious sanctions from us,” Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State sports ministry told Carl Orakwue on Saturday.

“We have also charged them to stop the infighting because that was another issue raised by the players that there was infighting amongst the management members of the team,” Nnodi said.

The three match ultimatum starts with the home game on Sunday against Wikki Tourist and then another home game on Wednesday against Akwa United.

But the question is- Does the Permanent Secretary or General Manager have the cojones to sack Stanley Eguma if he eventually does not win the next three games?

John Ogu sees Champions League as possibility

After a 2-0 first leg win against Ludogorets Razgrad, John Ogu wants to play in the Champions League group stages this season.

Though the team still has three more games to play to get there, Ogu sees it as a big possibility considering how close they got last year.

“Europe in the Champions League is something I am looking forward to,” Ogu told Naijafootball247.com.

“Last year we almost got there and it was just one goal we needed to get to the Champions League against Celtic that ensured we played in the Europa.

“We need to work hard and everyone is looking for this opportunity. Last year gave us belief and this year it is possible,” Ogu said.

Great to win League in Israel

The barrel chested midfielder described the feeling of being Israeli League champion as a great one.

“Winning the League in Israel is great. We fought hard in so many games in League Cup and then Super Cup.

“We knew it would be tough with teams like Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem and the rest but it was a great season last year.

“I must give credit to everyone as this is the second League title of my career.”

In the Champions League 2nd qualifying round, Be’er Sheva beat Budapest Honved 5-3 on aggregate before their game against Ludogarets Razgrad.

The return leg between Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Ludogorets comes up on August 2 in Bulgaria.

Top five recommended sanctions for Stanley Eguma?

Embattled Stanley Eguma
It has been four games since the three match ultimatum given to Rivers United gaffer, Stanley Eguma and the world awaits the sanctions that will be meted to him.

No doubt he failed woefully as out of three games he was supposed to win, he managed only one and lost one, so what happens next?

Just on Thursday, he lost on the Road (did someone say ‘as usual?’) to Kano Pillars in the 4th game since the ultimatum making it one win, one draw and two defeats.

According to the report from “his bosses” he had to win their next three games or face heavy sanctions.

The three games were against Wikki Tourists, Akwa United and Rangers and we know what happened.

Now how does he get punished?

I listened to the Permanent Secretary, Michael Nnodim and after all his findings during the investigations regarding the poor performance of the team, he stated that the coaching crew had been handed a three match ultimatum.

“We have instructed the technical crew to sit up. We have given them an ultimatum of three matches, to win those three matches for us or they will face serious sanctions,” went the Permanent Secretary of the sports ministry.

Now, three games of the ultimatum have gone by, so what does Nnodim do? How do Eguma and his crew get sanctioned?

What really is a sanction in this context, or serious one?

According to www.dictionary.com, a sanction is a provision of a law enacting a penalty for disobedience or a reward for obedience, so how does it fit in here?

Now the Stanley Eguma led technical crew disobeyed the instructions of their boss, the Permanent Secretary, who is currently the Acting Sports Commissioner, to win their next three games, so while we wait for him to come out with a law to enact this penalty for disobedience, these are my thoughts.

Stanley Eguma is untouchable

For what it’s worth, the Permanent Secretary, Michael Nnodi can huff and puff as much as he likes but cannot sack Stanley Eguma or even discipline him.

The General Manager of the club, Okey Kpalikwu cannot raise a finger against Eguma. Not even a sitting sports commissioner is willing to do that and I explain.

It was rumoured for a long time that Stanley Eguma is related to the current governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike. A rumour for a long time until the governor himself cleared the air in a public forum describing the coach as his cousin.

Eguma became coach of Rivers United as Dolphins in 2008 when Nyesom Wike was Chief Of Staff. He remained coach as Wike became Minister of Education and now governor of the state.

Now, as much as I know, the governor never placed an embargo on sacking or sanctioning his cousin, but in Nigeria, no one wants to be the man that sacks the “brother” of a state governor. So that is where Rivers United is, and, er, Stanley Eguma of course.

Does Stanley Eguma know that he is untouchable? Of course he does.

What possible ways can he be sanctioned, then?

If I am told to recommend, I will say it the way it is that Stanley Eguma should be sacked immediately and his assistant, Willy Udube be put in caretaker capacity until the end of the season.

But we all know that no one in the Rivers United hierarchy can do that so I have shortlisted five more realistic serious sanctions for him.

Write one thousand words:
For those of us who went to school in the 70s, 80s and maybe, 90s, when we err, our teacher will tell us to take a pencil and paper and write, “I will not make noise in class again” one hundred times or there abouts, depending on the severity of what we did.

Eguma should be instructed by the Perm Sec to write, handwritten and without the aid of technology, “I will start winning away from home” three thousand times before he is allowed to sit on the bench again. This should sort him, no?

Kneel down and hands up:
Still for those of us that went school in the days of corporal punishment, maybe on Monday, before their next home game against Katsina United he should be made to kneel down at the technical area and raise his hands up. For good measure, he should raise his hands up and be told stick out his tongue too. This should sort him, no?

Pick pin:

If the first two do not work then he must pick pin for the duration of the pre-match warm up by his team on Monday.
Picking pin was one of the meanest punishments given to us in school back in the day as it made the blood rush to your head. Maybe Eguma needs a blood rush to his head, no?

Come early for training: It is common knowledge that in his training program, Eguma does not include getting to the session on time.
At Dolphins as far back as 2001, it was rumoured that the players actually begged him to arrive on time at training the next day, especially when they had an important game ahead.
At Enyimba in 2004, Felix Anyansi Agwu and the rest of the management were almost driven nuts because of Eguma’s work discipline.
At Iwuanyanwu Nationale in 2005 it was the same thing and again at Sharks so it does not seem like he will change anytime soon.
Force him to bath and come for training early
One good punishment for him would be to use the Department of State Security, DSS to force him to get to training sessions on time.
DSS operatives must be at his house at 5:30am, force him out of bed at gun point, to the bathroom and then to the training pitch on time.
I believe there will be no greater punishment for him than this.

No more pressers: It is on record that whenever Rivers United lose or draw at home, Eguma snubs the post-match conference and sends his assistant, but in event of a win, he comes out proudly, smiling at everyone.
Another good punishment for him would be to stop him from talking to the press even when they win a game at home and the management insisting on his assistant doing it.

Because the coach is king

I hear people on radio shows in Port Harcourt shouting their guts out that Eguma should be sacked.
I feel sorry for them because it is just a waste of precious decibels.
I also read people on social media arguing on why Eguma should go. Sorry sods! They just waste precious data on a meaningless argument.
Eguma will coach Rivers United for as long as he wants so maybe fans of the club should enjoy their team play no matter the poor results and performance on the pitch.

They must also be patient too.

Will Eguma face any sanctions at all? My thoughts are a big NO!

So this blog post is certainly a waste of time and data too.
